Christchurch may have to reinstate 'night-carts' - oh dear

Some of you young things may never have heard of night carts - they are carts that used to come round during the dead of night to take away sewage from the early non-flushing toilets.

Sadly the entire sewage system of Christchurch has been destroyed in the quake - port-a-loos are now installed on every street (we hope - some poor beggars seemed to have been totally forgotten in the Eastern suburbs) - and thousands of chemical toilets are being delivered to homes.

Great - except that port-a-loos and chemical toilets need emptying - that seems to have been forgotten in the ongoing chaos.

The next thing for these poor guys will be disease - imagine a whole street of people using the same toilet and it not being emptied and it not being cleaned. Doesn't even bear thinking about - but someone needs to think about it. Ann

I guess with all that was happening sewage got put to the bottom of the list - but if gastric problems start (and they will if sewage isn't taken care of real soon) then expect the very young and the very old to go down like 9 pins. Someone needs to do something really quickly to prevent that happening - ann Sign up to our fortnightly issue of Powertools; a regular supply of business ideas; business tips and business tools for growing your business and receive a copy of 'What Next?' 29 Successful Entrepreneurs Sharing Their Predictions for 2011 and 2012. Just shows you when nature calls the shots the call of nature can be the downfall of all of us. One has to admire those people in the past that managed to live well and safely when no modern conveniences of any kind existed. We take an awful lot for granted. Whatever became of the small shovel and bit of soft ground behind the bushes? After all soil belongs in the soil...the soil has ways of rendering human waste safe and utilises it's contents. I never did quite understand the recycling via the drinking water or by dumping into the sea where our food comes from...Funny things folks! f

Where are the green brigade with the compost machines and technology ? I'm sure I've read that human waste can be processed/recycled used in green ways.
