Does Ecademy Marketplace really work?

Was reading a blog about Ecademy being a great place to do business and by this I hope it means to do PAID business.

So i went onto Marketplace and read some of the offerings.

Does it work? I would love to hear more from anyone who has had a great result from Marketplace and uses it regularly.

BTW check out my marketplace listing.

OK, still clicking on MORE and going to marketplace and still watching and learning. The patterns are forming. Learnt that one very small test on marketplace yielded some nice follow up. Stage II is to now go consistent. EWatch this space. By the way Fraser Hay has produced some incredibly generous support materials for Ecademy marketplace usuers. All you need to do is read. And say thanks.

Folks nothing new has been added to this blog about how to use MP. The discussion now is about how generous and sharing and open Ecademy members are. In my opinion near 100%. VERY impressed and grateful with Ecademy as a supportive network.

Tim good points. In my owen experience, I just reread all of the comments and a picture is emerging on how I can best use Marketplace. The little trials I have attempted suggest that MP works I am seeing that the Blog keeps the Google ranking current and top of mind. MP searches well because of the blog activity. Even little trials get fast attention. I have pretty much decided that my customers will not come from members but they will come through Ecademy's Google ranking.Enquiries are coming 100% from non-Ecademy members. I am pretty much going to focus on MP. I am more than happy to share what I discover but once I can show proof.

Does Ecademy Marketplace really work?

Mike totlly agree but I think you missed my point. For total clarity: 1. The comments and feedback was fabulous. 2. Many of the comments 'hint' at where to look. For example the Blackstar comments. Blackstars were very helpful for MY situation - but some asked that information that wass shared offline NOT be included in the blog. Two reasons: a) Blackstars obviously are privy to Blackstar benefits and information which they pay for not currently available to non-Blackstars. I guess if you want access to that info you become a Blackstar. b) most Blackstars said that if you sit on Marketplace and and simply watch it for two weeks - and reread their input - you will pick up some great ideas - their comments on the blog are telling you where to look - but you still have to do the hard yards and heavy lifting - and they want us to. 3. I also said I will make the entire feedback available with my comments - and I have already supplied some conclusions and observations in this blog that pretty much spell it out. The entire document is about a 70pp booklet which will available via a Slideshare link. So nothing held back at all (bar the information I was requested to withhold). 4. Lastly I am testing Marketplace and I said I would make the results available. But too soon yet. Hope that brings me back to the future.

Here's what I learned so far Marketplace

What I learned from this exercise Wishful Thinking 1. O boy! Captive market. I can sell everything just to Ecademy members; and it is going to be easy 2. Thinking Ecademy will solve my marketing challenges easily 3. All I need is Ecademy Marketplace Dumb Mistakes 1. Trying to sell just to Ecademy members 2. Not being a Blackstar 3. Doing just one listing, occasionally - you need lots; often 4. Not understanding how your Marketplace listing interacts with Google search engine rankings etc. 5. Not talking to Ecademy members who are making Marketplace work. 6. Thinking that the objective is to knock people off the ad pages. 7. Forgetting that Ecademy is asocial space rather than a transactional bloodbath. 8. Not knowing how basic functions of Ecademy work - if in doubt read the manual. Learn how. 9. Not thinking how Marketplace links to your web site - not integrating or leveraging those things. 10. Using Marketplace randomly and occasionally and without a strategy. Recommendations 1. You probably should become a Blackstar 2. Talk to people like William, Laurence, Fraser, Ian and Clare who are making it work. 3. Learn about SERPs, SEOs etc. i.e., Eddie Yu's SEO DVD is great as to William Buists material, Fraser's blog 4. Use Marketplace to sell to the outside world rather than just Ecademy members. Don't stress about selling inside Ecademy. 5. Play a long game - daily consistency and application obviously yields results overtime to an external market. 6. Use Marketplace as a portal for free or low cost offerings as part of an overall on-ramp marketing strategy aimed at the external market 7. Allocate some time to learning what the basic Ecademy site functions are available under your subscription then allow time to learn how to use those functions properly (see Tim's blogs). 8. Have a strategy. 9. Blackstars can set up auto relistings, other Ecademy membership options have to do it manually. If you are managing multiple options it pays to be a Blackstar. The Jury's Still Out 1. Obviously there's a fine line between working the Google juice ... and annoying the locals. 2. Clearly the outside world has a portal to your offering, who apparently I can market products and services to, so does that strategy work? (Yes it does). 3. Forget about transacting with Ecademy members? They don't want game changing offers? Is the concern we are annoying people too close to home? 4. Is Ecademy a business or a social space? 5. Why are you on Ecademy? What is your goal for being here?

Well... as a newly upgraded member ( 2 weeks) I have placed 7 marketplace listings and when I put the title of my listings into Google I have discovered that 4 of them are on the first page of Google, so If I can adjust them for my industry keywords and search inquiries then I can see a great benefit to the outside of Ecademy world...

For me, categorically, yes. The chief search term on Google I target with my marketplace ads is "Compromise Agreement Template". My main site appears at 2, 3, 4 and 5 in Google's organic search results. It took about 3 months to come to dominate that search term. I've been there for six months with no extra effort. Marketplace rocks. I learnt everything I apply from William's training course: time and money well invested.

Does Ecademy Marketplace really work?

For my first two market place listings that I put up a couple of days ago I have just run some google searches to see where the listings are currently ranking for UK based searches. The first listing was around vTiger CRM and for the top 4 phrases I was looking to rank for the listing comes in at positions 1, 91, 3, 5 & 6 (2 seperate posts on same page). The second post was around CiviCRM and for the top 5 phrases that I was hoping to rank for the listing comes in at positions 5, 9, 96*, 160**, 12 & 7. */** Yesterday these listings wern't in the top 500 results and after playing about with the content and adding more content they are now showing this morning. The above two listings have only generated a steady steam of traffic (circa 10 views each and a couple of these will from me) however another vTiger listing I posted at 9.56pm last night has already had 34 views. Right now I have just pulled some rough content together to see how the listings rank and what kind of traffic they generate which on the whole I believe has been positive. As a next step I need to improve the content/offer to see if I am able to try and get some conversions. For you guys that are already using market place well and generating results are you seeing conversions directly from your Ecademy listing or are you driving traffic to your website and the conversions are happening here? Interestingly and without specifically looking for this whilst running searches to see where my listings were showing in the results I noticed that a few other sites were also generating consistent results higher than Ecademy for the key words and phrases that I was searching on. These were... ukbusinessforums.co.uk classifieds.co.uk free-press-release.com LinkedIn - company pages LinkedIn - service pages ....so over the next few days I will copy some of the content (or produce similar listings) to these sites and re run the searches to see which ranks best. Naturally in an ideal world we just need to find 10 sites that rank well and secure all 10 listings on page 1 :-) The markets that I work in would provide me with the opportunity to have 000's of listings based around different phrases which could be a significant opportunity......albeit the task of key word/phrase research and writing all of the content is a daunting one.

Does Ecademy Marketplace really work?

The key point I am now getting from this blog is that the ideas work - i.e., Marketplace works. But there are some basics to understand and you have to TRY something. So far I have gone back to Marketplace and just watched and read. I've followed people that were suggested and people like William are dropping a LOT of clues as to next steps. I am currently preparing two campaigns but here's what happened so far... I ran a small campaign of four twists to an offer for strategic audits for SMEs. In 24 hours I had 29 views of Offer 1, and 2-4 views of Offers 2, 3 and 4. Hmmm. And I have had one enquiry to offer 1 ... from OUTSIDE Ecademy. If I am learning anything from this exercise, the goal now is to a) test offers and b) keep going.

Does Ecademy Marketplace really work?

Since reading this post last week I actually set up two market place listings (Title only no other content) just to see how quickly they would rank and where they came in the listings. Both got listed in 15-20 minutes and to say they were title only with no other page content or geographically targetted ranked pretty well. Between the two listings they have generated 12 views in the last week (probably a couple are mine plus one other ecademy view but that still leaves around 8-9 views that have been generated through Google in less than a week which is interesting. I am absolutely amazed at the number (2400+) of listings Claire Louise Hegerty has on Market place even more so when you take in to account the sheer amount of content some of these listings have and the fact they are well written. I can also see from some Google searches that I have just done that many of Claire's listings are coming up on the first page which is no doubt generating a very consistent stream of leads for her - well done Claire I'm in awe. Working in a number of different areas myself (bespoke software development, open source software, web applications, websites, data migration & conversion) I can start and see now how this might work for me........albeit I would need to write 7 posts every single day for a year to match Claire's 2400 listings which is a phenominal achievement (not sure if there is a lot of duplicate content within these? even if there is it is still a significant undertaking).

Does Ecademy Marketplace really work?

Tim, Some interesting questions are emerging for me about what Ecademy really is for me. I have to admit I was 'sold' the idea that Ecademy was a business space where making people offers (via appropriate channels and methods) a was legitimate activity. The comments are starting to trend towards Ecademy is a social space and adverts and offers annoy the members. This concerns me. I got your point and the point made by others that blasting you with the same offer or spamming you offers was poor Ecademy etiquette. I imagined someone texting me or ringing me up every two minutes - even if its a great offer - and frankly I shuddered. I hate being pestered too. But I also realised that that comes with the internet territory. I am also concerned that if I simply spend 15 minutes hammering the Marketplace section with the same or a slightly tweaked add because it is a legitimate way to broadcast to the external world feels a bit like my next door neighbour shouting over my fence to neighbours up the street. In any case I am learning a lot about Ecademy, Marketplace and the generous spirit of Ecademy members and finding this very helpful. So far the thread is giving me ideas that fall into the following categories: Dumb Mistakes Recommendations Juries Still Out Wishful Thinking I plan to make that list available shortly.

Does Ecademy Marketplace really work?

I have been using Marketplace for my adverts for over 6 years, and I know that it works, because people outside of ecademy find these adverts and call me. It is very cost effective compared to other advertising, as long as you make the effort to keep adverts fresh and keep up to date. I can't specifically quantify it as William Buist, but it is still a way to create more web pages to be indexed by Google to give our company a boost! Can't be bad.

Does Ecademy Marketplace really work?

Tim my concern is that I'm running a greta event, posting it to Marketplace and it simply vanishes as you've described. The sad thing is: when I speak to Ecademy people off they record they don't give a favourabvle score card to M'place. But my point is Ecademy should be the FIRST you go to. I do a lot of work with Key Person of Influence community and they are incredibly supportive of each other. Perhaps because its a smaller group and right now the members are really embracing the shop 'locally' ethos ... or what I am starting to see as shop 'socially' - people you know etc. That raises another thorny issue and that is: is Ecademy a name collecting exercise or as Mike Turner powerfully demonstrated some months back a relational/connecting exercise. I was really inspired by Mike Turner's campaign to contact people on his contacts list. I have been doing this with both Linked in and Ecademy and I KNOW that people have done business via that handshake. I've ended up doing a lot of our 121 startegic audits from simply touching bases. Nice enough, but the next step is to feed my associates - as so to speak and I wanted Marketplace to be my preferred tool of choice.

Rob, I wonder why that is? I am really curious leap frogging off the little 'test' I conducted around your book Grow Your Service Firm - great book BTW. A few people emailed me directly thanking me for the referral but do Ecademy people buy from Ecademy people? I know that the Key Person of Influence community is very active internally and now treats KPIs as preferred suppliers and they actually start there before they go outside. But Ecademy is a bigger and more established community. I am trying to buy and I was toying with the idea of creating a group called Insider Trading but then I thought the regulators would not appreciate that!

Does Ecademy Marketplace really work?

By asking 'does it work?' one presumes you want quantifiable proof that people click on the ads or call from them/ visit the website and at some point down the line convert into clients, as that pays the bills, rather than just produce multiple ads that show on rotation and, to me anyway. make me tune out when I see the same peoples ads multiple times on the first page, albeit for different services. If I see an ad on marketplace, but I haven't seen the person engaging on here much if at all, why would I respond to the ad over engaging with someone through their blogs? This was posted while WB and TO were posting theirs and I understand and agree with the approaches mentioned in their posts re SEO and focussing outside Ecademy etc

This is the age old question

Ecademy marketplace is an excellent tool for two things: 1. to have your advert seen outside of Ecademy. These adverts are indexed quickly by Google and are given great positions in Google's search engine. 2. If you link to your own website from a marketplace advert then the backlink from Ecademy adds googlejuice to your website AND YOUR OWN WEBSITE GETS A BETTER RANKING IN GOOGLE. I have experimented this and so has James Coakes as far I as recall. I would point out that it is not the best tool for trying to flog your wares to Ecademy members. I believe this should be done by setting up a COMPANY PAGE. i don't have one because I am not trying to flog things to the members here and I don't really want anyone else to start spamming me. New memmbers often complain that the adverst they post on Marketplace get pushed off the frnt page quickly. Well that's how it is and they will only get bumped even quicker in the future and more members join and post. Just think how many adverts we would have if all of the members/account posted 1 ad per month. William and Lyndon tell us there are 600,000 accounts. I advert per month would be 600,000 in 30 days. = 20,000 per day = 833 per hour = 14 per minute = 1 advert every 4 seconds befiore you take into account Blackstar automatic reposting. In short, Ecademy gets more and more members and they all use it to the best by posting marketplace adverts then yours will be rushed off the Marketplace frontpage in minutes. This is why you should use you company page to sell to members. And before anyone shouts "It's not fair" just think that there are far more acrive members of Google than there are active members of Ecademy. Use Markeplace to sell to the world, not our members.

Does Ecademy Marketplace really work?

You have to think about SERP (Search Engine Results pages) - It's not advertising to people, It's about getting on pages that will be viewed by people. You need many, you need to keep them fresh by reposting and/or changing them, and you need to make them keyword and geographically rich. Those who are getting results have hundreds of listings, not a few. Paying for BlackStar just for marketplace reposting is a massive RoI compared to doing this through a google ads campaign. Changes in this area of the website could easily damage what is a very valuable resource to a few people who have worked out how to make it work really well. I tip my hat in recognition of that to Ian Hornblow and Claire Louise Hegarty.
