Ecademy Boardrooms: Do you benefit from Membership?

I have been a member of the Ecademy boardroom in Farnham since March 2010 and I have been the Chairman of this boardroom for 12 months. I have benefited a great deal from my membership in terms of the priceless business advice I have received and the real friendships I have forged with fellow board members.

I can say with hand on heart that my business is now viable and growing due in no small part to the expert guidance I have received during nearly three years of Boardroom membership.

Although I employ staff, my business is not large enough to employ other directors with expertise in areas of business which I am not experienced. For example in the fields of finance, book keeping, tax, VAT, HMRC etc.

One simple piece of advice which I received from a book-keeper in my boardroom earned me £4,000.00 per year and this is just one example of how I have utilised my membership for profitable business benefit.

Have you attended an Ecademy Boardroom? Do you have any questions about boardrooms?

I would love to answer your questions if you have any.

Check for your nearest Boardroom...

Regards - Mick

Ecademy Boardrooms: Do you benefit from Membership?

My boardroom is Croydon. Over all the best thing about it for me is having a place where I don't have to be the boss (who can not falter in these difficult times) or the consultant (who has to have a plan) but I can be someone who is puzzled and looking at different approaches. My fellow board members often share similar dilemmas and the very fact we discuss thee things together, from vastly differing perspectives is allowing me to build a robust and effective set of offerings, structures and methods - way beyond what I would be doing on my own. The technical expertise from board members is great too - but for me it is the shared experience of being a boss and growing a business that is priceless.

Ecademy Boardrooms: Do you benefit from Membership?

I have been to one Boardroom (Farnham) with Penny, Thomas, Alan, Richard, Matt and a few other great guys .. This was in early 2011. Since then, my schedule in the UK has not coincided with another boardroom I could join unfortunately. I am still traveling a lot, and scheduling becomes hard. I found the boardroom of tremendous benefit, and would love to join one again soon - and hope to make this a regular event. Hopefully this year I will try and get to at least 4 Boardrooms - my target ! Ketan

Ecademy Boardrooms: Do you benefit from Membership?

In The Netherlands we don't have any boardrooms. I have set up one in Harderwijk and there is no supportstructure in Holland anymore. Ecademy in that form is dead in Holland. I know I am accountable and at the same time Ecademy Ltd is not delivering on its promise. That is the general feeling here. i have discussed the revitalisation of Ecademy in Holland with Cornelis de Maijer and we cannot do it on our own.

Blackstar Boardrooms in my experience are a great way to build a community of peers who can and will speak creatively into situations, the better you let them know you the better they can serve. Its been great to find hard hitting insight into your business that comes out of relationship! A well run blackstar boardroom can create cuspal moments that change businesses and destinies! Worth a conversation, worth engaging with, worth the investment! See you at a boardroom meeting sometime, someplace! Regards Dave Food Strategic Director Prophetic Technology

As a relatively new member I value the Farnham Boardroom for the quality, integrity and immense collective expertise of the people there and also because it allows me to work with 'live ammunition' - real business people with real business issues. Long may it continue!

Ecademy Boardrooms: Do you benefit from Membership?

Hiya Mick and Anna The Farnham boardroom is a particularly special one for me. I believe that I have only missed one since I started coming about 18 months back, I have made some really good friends as well as people who I really like respect and trust, who have helped me in a personal and a business level and hopefully I have given back, Each time, I come away with atleast 4 or 5 little nuggets or sometimes 2 or 3 woppers which hits me between the eyes and are potentially life changing and that is even if your topic is not chosen. I personally blame a certain Mr Mick Say, who if he hadnt started by pinching my stomach and said "you have put on a bit of weight" mistaking me for a certain William Buist would never had such a good laugh and are good mates today and of course the lovely Anna Figial who just makes stuff happen. Well done to the two of you - you are a fantastic double act and I for one as well as many others really value the unique place that you have made Farnham to be Look forward to seeing you next month, Rupert

and another no-surprise comment from me ..

Hi Mick Following Friday's excellent session, you and I are clearly thinking along similar lines. Truthfully, participating in the Farnham boardroom as a regular member has been one of the most beneficial experiences of my life. I couldn't do justice to all the reasons, but here are some: I get away from my computer and meet great people who I like, trust and respect. Sometimes I receive their full attention and support to my issue. Other times their input to someone else's issue is just as applicable to me. I have the opportunity to showcase my particular insight and expertise in a relevant way. I have gained clients who have selected me on the basis of knowing me. I have gained friends. Thank you for your commitment to the Farnham boardroom - you too are priceless :)

Ecademy Boardrooms: Do you benefit from Membership?

I am sure that you won't be surprised by my response either. The boardrooms for me have proved time and again that they are absolutely worth effort to attend, the time out from 'working' to be there and the energy it takes to take part. I always come away with more than I had when I went in. As for whether it is worth the financial commitment - there is no need to even contemplate the pros and cons of this - the financial benefits FAR exceed the monetary costs. Bristol is now moving into its third year. It has seen many changes over that time and will no doubt continue to morph as people grow and progress. I personally would not be where I am both personally and professionally without the support of the boardrooms and their members. My second favourite has to be Wilmslow boardroom which has some truly awesome members. For me it is the perfect night out. Brainstorming with other like-minded people tackling big and meaningful puzzles and challenges. Great company. Superb food and invariably wonderful conversations and laughter too. So when are you coming to Bristol Mick?

It's Not Just The More Experienced Members

My own experience of Boardrooms is that the best advice doesn't always come from people more experienced than the person raising the issue. It's always easier to think of answers to other people's problems than for your own. And even the least experienced person can make suggestions that are fantastically valuable, and which they had no idea were lurking in their sub-conscious. Their huge separation from the 'nitty gritty' can add to their ability to 'see the wood for the trees'. And yes, I do personally get a lot of tangible benefit by attending.

Nobody will be surprised to find that I agree with you entirely. Like you Mick I can put my finger on two things. One is the development of a product within the business which is now in beta and will go live first quarter this year, all directly from a Boardroom issue. Every penny that product makes is 'found' because I turned up and took part. The Boardroom members are actively involved in testing it and if they wish to can get affiliate commissions when it goes live, I hope we will all benefit significantly from the collaboration. You can do that quickly and easily because of the trust in the room. The other is a direct cost saving as a result of finding out about better back office products to use as a result of someone else's issue. That's paying for the costs of attending the Boardroom, everything else I get is profit.

Ecademy Boardrooms: Do you benefit from Membership?

Hi Mick I agree that Boardrooms are fantastic places. I too have learned much about being business like and am sure that my business mind set has been focussed and developed due to boardroom participation. Being able to report back on progress each month is a great thing alone. Add to that the advice received from others and listening to others issues which are often ones I can draw help from it is difficult to put a price on it. Regards Shelley

Yes, my experience in the Boardroom has been excellent, Mick. I've developed a more savvy business mind-set just through listening to other people's issues, let alone through working with mine. And being able to contribute from my expertise has been part of developing the great relationships between us. I think the established Boardrooms will continue to flourish... Warm wishes Sharon

Ecademy Boardrooms: Do you benefit from Membership?

Dear Mick I assume your explanation is correct. The only point in my case is that I don't do business but let business happen. This means that more than 70 % of the talks in a boardroom will be theory which is not applicable for me. Te only thing I could do in a boardroom is explain how science can support business by creating spin-off firms or spin-off units in institutes which is total opposite to the classical view that business should endorse science. You are invited to follow an explanation about this subject in the next lecture from Ir. Luc De Ceuster PMP (www.APraCom.cz) who acts as my project manager and is Professor at the UNYP Nevertheless thank you for sharing your opinion with me. Regards Prof. Guy Van Elsacker
