How much does it cost to set up a Sharepoint server?

Open Minded Days - How can we work better together so that we all get more from Ecademy?

I am putting together a quotation for a client where an option is to have a sharepoint server. I am thinking of a hosted server not one in the clients office.

There would be a small team 10 or less using the server regularly for storage of documents, photographs and videos from site surveys. Their clients growing to 100s would need access to their files.

You can really get a lot from using a hosted Windows SharePoint Services from anything from 29$ a month including up to 250 users and with 1 GB space.

How much does it cost to set up a Sharepoint server?

Andrew, I assume your are just talking about basic WSS V3 deployments, not MOSS deployments....your high level requirements point to this but do qualify, if I have made an error here. From a pure hosting cost perspective, it depends (obviously!) on your requirements and many hosting firms out their 'slice and dice' their offerings so make it difficult to do a comparison. Things to be aware of in your research: $ to £ ratio is good at the moment so don't rule out gaining a service from the US NO UK service providers will give you hosted/shared WSS V3 (only standalone offerings) Consider requirements for security - iso 27001 from the ISP (some government organisations demand this) Consider keeping your branding requirements to a minimum Consider how/if you will support the solution at an application level (not infrastructure as the ISP will do this) Consider how you will fulfil the support requirements, SLA's for example. Consider user training Consider design time, i.e. how you will agree the overall design you are going to build Allocate contingency to cover elements you all forget! Watch out for large storage being bungled into small amount of users, then charging you a lot for adding users later Support from US can be limited/difficult with the time difference. Finally, as you are deploying to just a few users in the short term, but likely to ramp up in the near future consider the structure very carefully on your design and in particular consider the underlying database structure which ideally maps in some way to your site structure (depending on storage requirements) as you need to consider operational backup/restore issues on your environment going forward, especially in light of the criticality. Hope those comments help galvanised your quotation! Kind Regards, Andrew Walmsley WorkShares Limited

WSS for 29$ a month....

You can really get a lot from using a hosted Windows SharePoint Services from anything from 29$ a month including up to 250 users and with 1 GB space. I have over the years used Webhost4life.com and despite that I have sometime encounters downtime, the overall service is very good. http://www.webhost4life.com/wss.asp I have found it easy to customize it to meet my needs, ex. a small billing application, blogs, sub webs for clients ect.. I haven't tried http://www.sharepointhosting.com/sharepoint-pricing.html by it seems to offer even more goodies out of the box, nice.. I'm a SharePoint developer. -chris
