"...let me know if there's anything I can help you with"

When people message you and say "Hi, let me know if I can help you with anything" and nothing else.....I find this so hard to respond to. I mean, what is there to say in response to that? Do they want a response?

My thoughts:

- What do they think I need help with? I wish they would say.
- What help are they offering? I wish they would say.
- Are they just saying this to add me as a contact, or do they have a geniune interest in interracting with me?

Amanda

I think people are being over critical here, I see the phrase as a form of virtual "small talk". Regards Bernard Making Sense of Numbers

Another message which is a bit annoying: Hi Jon Thanks for looking at my Marletplace listing - more details here.... - With a newspaper you can look at an ad in peace. You don't need to have anyone chasing you for a sale. I don't reply. Jon Jon Stow Consulting Business & Tax Solutions

"...let me know if there's anything I can help you with"

I gave a newbie a very specific request of what he can help me with after he sent me a cut 'n' paste. Am I surprised that no further message has been forthcoming? Not one little bit. ;) There are increasingly large number of shallow people here on Ecademy. "...let me know if there's anything I can help you with"

I've received a couple like that as well. I assumed it was their way of getting me to look at their profile and possibly buy what they sell. Maybe someone who sends such messages will explain their intended purpose. Robin

It's like the lady on the deli counter at Waitrose who says "can I help you" as if you're a criminal for interrupting her conversation. I'm trying to address this kind of issue here.. Steve Holmes CVs that work Does your career get the same attention you give for others?

I think normally it's the latter. IME when you take the trouble to read their profile (if they've bothered to write one), find some synergy and write a PM about your shared interests, it's quite rare to get a reply. Derek
