Most of life is habitual...

Have you noticed: most of life is habits being repeated again and again - thinking, doing, saying, believing are all "done" in the same way?

Life becomes patterns we don't even know are there because they are hidden in our subconscious, running us on autopilot. The result of these habitual behaviours is that we see the world through them. They colour our world-perception.

Is the world as we think it is - as we project our image of it onto it? Or, is it possible to be Oh! So different? Full of possibilities of wonder?

My favourite "habit" story...

Another great blog Benn - dare I say you're making a habit of it! This is an old story (as most of mine tend to be) but it does seem apt. A little girl was in the kitchen with her Mum, who was busy cooking Sunday lunch - roast leg of lamb. As part of the preparation, Mum was using a large meat cleaver to remove the last couple of inches from the end of the leg. The daughter asked why and after much thought, Mum confessed that she was not really sure but it was something she had seen her own mother doing when she had been growing up. The youngster persisted in her quest for the truth, so after lunch, they phoned Granny to try to solve the mystery. The response was that her mother in turn had done the same thing. It was nothing but an established habit, not a superstition but a custom born out of necessity. A standard leg of lamb happened to be two or three inches longer than the great grandmother's roast tin! I once read that Albert Einstein calculated out that on average, 78% of our perceptions are wrong. Even a genius (like him) could expect to get 75% wrong, or 74% on a good day. For those of us who don't make a habit of arguing with geniuses, that's a sobering thought, and certainly explains the benefits of collaboration with those who share the same values as a means of improving our chances of avoiding the consequences of so many false perceptions. What we achieve in life is determined by the habits we cultivate - good or bad. Habits are determined by our actions, which result from our decisions, which are based on feelings, which stem from attitudes, which are formed by our values and beliefs, which ultimately are controlled by our thoughts. That may explain the title of the most famous self-help book of all time: Think and Grow Rich. Most of life is habitual...

Benn - Great subject. I 'accidentally' changed a habit of a lifetime this year. Something I thought I'd never do. I friend/coach taught me about daily visualisation so each morning, amongst other things, I look at my list of 'strengths, weaknesses and repeated mistakes'. In my weaknesses, I had things like, procrastination, easily distracted, don't plan enough. The intention was to get myself to plan my days better to get more achieved. About 2 months later, I suddenly noticed that after a lifetime of constantly being late for everything, I was suddenly on time, every time!.... and 4 months on it's still working - A new habit! It's absolutely possible to change habits, it just takes effort and focus. Love it! Traceu

victoria@victoriabullis.com OH boy....your information is SO applicable to today's (worn out) modes of responding to information/ideas/etc....WE have changed; time to alter the way we think, our perceptions and our response patterns... ALL those--are SO much aspects of ego... BUT I am digressing. Your topic is re habitual habits ....and I do totally agree that we need to 'see' what those are, assess them... in order to change at least some of them---and flow with what new perceptions, attitudes, etc we need to move towards, for what is coming. Hey Benn, I know that the world is not what I "think" it to be because "thinking" as such is the problem. The experience that we are only the "watcher" of our actions, thoughts and feelings is so alien to most people that to debate it would really be a waste of everybody's time, surely. To experience the wonder of life and to see that we are made out of dream stuff is the beginning of a new dawn most will never see....at least not for a few lifetimes. There was a time when we sat in our high chairs and had to be fed. Then by concentrating and being focussed we learned to hold a spoon and feed ourselves. It became a habit. And we managed to dispense with feeder cups - and drink from a glass without pouring it all over ourselves. And walking, and running, and jumping and skipping, and climbing stairs and we had to master buttons, opening yoghurt pots, and the TV remote control. As a learner, driving a car was once fiendishly difficult, managing the steering, road positioning, speed adjustment, the clutch and gears. Now after years of practice these are all automatic routines and we can travel hundreds of miles with ease. That wide repertoire of habits frees up our active consciousness to focus on what is dynamic and novel, and let all the peripheral tasks happen as needed. As high functioning adults we only operate effectively by performing hundreds of different tasks automatically. Rather than dismiss or decry habits, we should celebrate the fact that we have achieved mastery of all these tasks with increasing complexity and subtlety, and that frees us up for more esoteric or complex tasks. If we had to start from first principles every morning we would not have ventured to the stars. We would still be shivering in caves, cold hungry and wet, and frightened of the wolves. The broader the range of skill sets we develop the more we can do automatically the better. All rights reserved. Most of life is habitual...

A fascinating subject area, Benn! Of course the trick is to adopt successful, effective habits, yet most of us appear to do the opposite. Myself included - which I find frustrating! It's the inventors and creators who broke with habit who have shaped and advanced our world since mankind started walking upright. We see this in animals too. The basis of dog training is to build desired behaviour by reinforcing that behaviour as a habit. And I'm reminded of those wildlife programmes showing the only troupe of monkeys who have learned the habit of washing their food, or the only colony of birds which have learned the habit of prising open tough shells using a particular method. Most of life is habitual...

Totally agree! The pattern becomes a programme. The programme just runs and we end up living at the affect of the programme. To break the programme we have to continually step out of our comfort zones, step into the new. When we were children, before our programmes had fully set in, we constantly stepped out of our comfort zones, tried new things, we were freer, lighter, more spontaneous, more alive. Each time we step out of the comfort we re-access this sense of liberation. The longer the stay comfortable, the less we notice the entropy. Next thing we know we wonder how we got wherever we are! The reality was, we were more or less asleep. The light was on with no-one at home. Just a programme running. Learning to break habitual habits, to break the programme can be fun. However, the thought of 'change' keeps us stuck in the unknown. Apparently Mark Twain said " I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened" Great to meet you yesterday by the way Benn :-) Martin

You're right, we are on auto pilot so much that we aren't even aware of half of what we do, and to consider if we can or should change our patterns of thought and behavior. Intensive introspection is the key. Unfortunately most of the populace is far to busy to introspect on a daily basis. Amanda
