Should William Buist become the new MD of Ecademy?

Let's face it, everyone knows William.

William knows everyone.

He's been running blackstar for donkey's ages.

He tirelessly polices Ecademy.

The powers that be, trust him to bits.

He has his detractors like any good leader (dont we all), but...

his heart is always firmly focussed on the ecademy community and its members...

let's start slow clapping and shouting from the roof tops....

William. William. William.

Pull your babies from their prams, arm them with their flags, and start chanting....

William. William. William.

Line the streets around Britain, you can even organise your own street party...

William. William. William.

What do you think?

Should William Buist become the new MD of Ecademy?

I think Penny provided the answer at Monday's ROSEE. Daniel remains the business MD, but she herself will be the spiritual MD. That said, William is the most active, with the highest E-score, signifying that his influence as well as his own activities have the greatest impact within Ecademy. What might turn out to be the biggest and best change now taking place is the resurrection of the 'Community' spirit. There is relatively little conflict in the online forums and blogs, and in the offline meetings, such as boardrooms, Black Star days and ROSEE, there is some powerful bonding in evidence. Perhaps a new level of leadership is forming by natural selection.

In answer to the original blog - wherever it came from, why not. William obviously works hard and shows a presence here - often engaging in a way most managers don't.

All of this movement in the IT world is a bit of a problem, for me and undoubtedly everyone else. If facebook nose dives I'll have to upload all of my travel photos elsewhere and re-caption them. The IPO sounds a bit of a mess if you believe the news.

Dear Fraser, I like William, I also like you, Thomas, Penny and Daniel! Eric Jackson, Forbes Contributor who covers the business of technology thinks that Google and Facebook Might Completely Disappear in the Next 5 Years After having asked, which company do you think is more likely to disappear in the next 5 years? He got the following scores: Facebook - 48%Google - 6%Both - 6%Neither - 40%He explained that we've really had 3 generations: Web 1.0 (companies founded from 1994 - 2001, including Netscape, Yahoo! (YHOO), AOL (AOL), Google (GOOG), Amazon (AMZN) and eBay (EBAY)),Web 2.0 or Social (companies founded from 2002 - 2009, including Facebook (FB), LinkedIn (LNKD), and Groupon (GRPN)),and now Mobile (from 2010 - present, including Instagram). and that the the prior generation can't quite wrap its head around the subtle changes that the next generation brings. The funny thing is, Apple seems to be the big exception in the game! Well, coming back to the MD question, why not divide it into the US like CXO where Daniel could keep his role as CEO and William take over the role of COO? Just my two cents of input! Have a great and happy Sunday! Best, Lucas

I was just getting used to Daniel after all those years of "the management committee" or whatever the robot sending out automatic emails was called. Does this change mean that someone actually manages Ecademy? Well, I never. That certainly is a surprise. I thought it was being allowed to "evolve".

Ecademy seems to me to be stagnating somewhat. It is about time that the future of Ecademy is pondered upon and perhaps a new course being set! I have said for ages, that platforms like these must give more value than just connecting people and a bit of blogging and chatter. We can do that much better on FaceBook! Would William be the right person? I don't know but he can't be any worse than Daniel, who seems only interested in KPI stuff! I think William might bring a fresh face to Ecademy! (Sorry for the pun) Regards

Interesting Blog Fraser. As far as I know the position isn't vacant and Daniel's an exceptional business leader. One thing I think that we all (Members, Thomas, Penny, Daniel and the team) share is a dedication to support entrepreneurial business people. I think we also all know that there much change that could be brought, and some that should, to make this the goto place for those entrepreneurial businesses. Whatever my role with the Organisation that's my focus.

Well now, isn't that an interesting idea? Monday evening William will be speaking at the ROSEE meeting. Also speaking will be Penny Power, and her topic will be ... wait for it ... her role in Ecademy, in view of the latest developments! If you really want to know what is going on, you should be there. Why not book yourself in now?

What we'd need to know is what difference it would make. None I gather.

When I saw this post I Thought of "yes minister" particularly this paragraph: "If asked if he wants to be Prime Minister, the generally acceptable answer for a politician is that while he does not seek the office, he has pledged himself to the service of his country, and that should his colleagues persuade him that that is the best way he can serve, he might reluctantly have to accept the responsibility, whatever his personal wishes might be." Should William Buist become the new MD of Ecademy?

I think that William would make a superb MD of Ecademy. You are right, he knows the place inside out, understands how the community functions, has an excellent grasp of how to support people here - both personally and professionally, can spot the ungracious and fakes a mile off (always good to know) and blimey if you have ever seen him in action ..... .........he knows how to get things done. His tireless and relentless dedication to make things happen is extraordinary. So for all these reasons here and those that you give above, I wholeheartedly agree that he would make a brilliant MD - really brilliant. BUT .... as Julia says - would he want to be MD of Ecademy? Would he be better serving the community as he is now or from some other position elsewhere? Also how would him being MD fit in with the rest of the plans for Ecademy? I am sure that there are many elements to this picture of which we are unaware. I have no doubt that expressing our desire to see William in place of honour at the High Table acknowledging our appreciation of him and the role that he plays would be very much appreciated. I do trust though that the right decision will be made at whatever point it is appropriate.
