Using Social Networking to grow your business

Using Social Networking to grow your business

(Updated Blog 9th October 2010)

Penny PowerI am a member of Ecademy, OK, I am also the Founder, but like you I want to have a place where I can build my personal brand, be known and liked and through the followers that I attract - I want to continue to offer them my advice, support and perhaps inspire. Over the 12 years (edited 2010) of owning Ecademy I have learnt so much about myself, about building an online brand and about being myself.

Ecademy was created to help people just like my husband and myself. Normal people. Working hard, raising a family, wanting to earn respect for our expertise, wanting to be needed and wanting friendships. I am sure you are just like that.

We have achieved a balance and a life through leveraging our personal network and through leveraging the tools on the Internet that everyone can. I have written this Blog to explain how Ecademy can help you.

Being self employed, owning your own business, going out on your own for the first time, or being inside a business and wanting to share your thoughts are common place here on Ecademy. We are all in the same bucket, needing to find customers, 'YES', that is the big one, but also, needing to feel useful to others, needing to answer business questions that we do not have the expertise to do, tax, websites, accounting, legal issues, marketing, branding, selling — the list goes on, running a business is not solved just by having another customer.

How these lists of needs are achieved online and within a Social Network remains a mystery to so many. Why is that? It is because this is a scary new world? Once conquered you will ask yourself 'why was I so afraid'? Indeed once understood, you will ask yourself, 'why did I think it was so complicated?' Isn't that always the way?

In May 2010 Thomas Power summed up the shift and the difficulty many have online and that is the shift to having a Digital Mindset.

A Digital Mindset is a state of mind. As business people many of us have built our plans and business persona with 20th Century thinking. We have been Institutionalized in our thinking and we have built businesses with tasks, plans and controllable networks and filtering methods. We call this being 'Closed Selective and Controlling'. In the Digital Age we need to be Open, Random and Supportive.

Look at your children, or look at any young person under 25 — they are not scared of sharing information, of building up a network of random people, and critically, what they are demonstrating all the time, is how to achieve a personal brand. For some it is not a good brand that they create, we all hear the stories of kids who failed to get a job or failed to get a place at the University of their choice, due to their FaceBook or MySpace profile, however, this is new to them too, they do not fully understand values, morals and the dangers of displaying a dark side, this is why Ecademy is devoted to ensuring your safety and to achieving a good ethos.

Ecademy was created and lives and breathes 12 years on, with the total determination that you will network in a safe place with like-minded people — and through this you will learn, develop and build a brand that you are proud of, a brand that is clear, reflects who you are, and draws people and opportunities to you at the right time.

The right people, at the right time.

This is the first learning point for us all. You are on a journey in your life, you have not reached the end yet, and your needs now will be different to your needs in one month, 2 months, a year, 5 years. Joining and being part of Ecademy is about finding solutions to your needs in real-time with real people, right now.

Ask yourself — what are my needs now? You will probably answer, more sales, but is that true? If you need more sales, why is that? Are you networking effectively? Do people really want to buy what you are selling? How are you marketing your business? Is your website efficient and optimised? Do you get many people coming to you, or do you always have to find your clients?

I created this slide for my presentations, it demonstrates the difference between putting out a fishing net, when we focus on Transactions or Being a Magnet, when we want to attract Followers.

Fish or attract - the digital divide

Online you want to create 'Followers', these people will follow what you are leading. They will notice what you write and say and they will share with others of it is something that they want to be associated with. This is why we have added the ability to Tweet Blogs, and we now see this happening several thousand times on the blog page each day.

Belonging to a Social Network gives you the opportunity to build a very successful business based on advocacy, referrals, collaboration, advice, care, kindness, inspiration, tough feedback and friendships, this is why we call it a Social Business Network.

The shift I ask you to make is one of

  • Meeting a Stranger, who becomes your friend, who becomes a Follower of what you stand for and share

A big change to

  • Suspects, Prospects and Customers

Take a look at this slide I use, it shows the Traditional Mindset 'doing it all alone' and the Supportive Mindset - doing it with friends around them.

Transactions or Followers

So how do you switch to being supportive?
....................

Become a friend - be yourself

Your journey to this point in your life is interesting, why you do what you do is interesting. All these factors lead to your expertise, to your passions, and that leads back to your business, and to you as a person, that can be trusted and liked — and it leads to others caring about your success.

So, don't treat Ecademy like some giant networking event where everyone stands around and throws business cards at one another, and then go home feeling that they have just spent another night out and question 'what was achieved?'. Treat Ecademy as your new community, your friend, someone that wants you to be successful, and a place where you can feel safe asking for help, telling your story, and gaining respect because of who you are — an expert, and someone who is living the dream of loving what they do.

Your Attraction Zone

I said at the beginning, attract the right people to you at the right time — and remember this:if you pretend that you are already a millionaire, and life is a breeze, then no one needs to help you. There is also a danger in this. I like to think of you being bang on your 'attraction zone'. Imagine a graph, with 3 lines. The middle line is your attraction zone — when you are there, everyone likes you, you are humble, patient, kind, relationships are good and you feel good.

When you first step into networking you can be in danger of going above this zone or below it. Above it, you will come across as arrogant, big-headed or even too successful for anyone to feel worthy of speaking to you. Below it, you will come across as angry, bitter and even scared and people will feel you are either too nasty, or will see you as a liability to be associated with.

Think about this when you network, it is critical.

Your Flame

Something very valuable was taught to me by Roger Hamilton a few years ago, and that is all about being in your 'Flame'. I love this, so I want to share it, it is something I apply in my life every day and since I have, life has been very good to me.

This is all about leveraging your talent, your expertise, and ensuring that others can see it displayed. You decided to own your business, or perhaps take on a role in a business, as you felt that was going to be a way to focus on what you are great at, a bit like the moment when you get to drop seven subjects at school and focus on three you like and then, eureka, at University you get to talk and study about one subject. Working and owning your own business should feel like that. However, has your life turned out like that, do you love every minute of what you do?

Imagine you are a candle — part of you is a flame, and part of you is the wax.

When you are in your flame, you are on fire, you can light a million other candles without using any energy, you can shine brightly, you go home feeling energised, happy and know that you have contributed in the way you want to — money flows when you are like this.

When you are in your wax, you are reducing in value in the way the wax reduces. You feel tired, you don't feel good at what you have done that day, life feels tough and you probably reflect this in the relationships around you.

When you started your business, or a new job, you were in your flame. Over time, other things take over, and the moments of feeling on fire reduce, your wax increases and you do not shine. To attract people to you, you need to shine, you need to feel positive, and you need to feel you are contributing. Creativity and energy is critical to your survival, but that becomes harder to achieve. This is when collaboration and getting help from your network will make the difference. Your wax is someone else's flame, your flame is someone else's wax, wow! What a match-making opportunity, if only we all spoke openly to each other and really got to know one another... that's where Ecademy comes in.

Understanding the difference between tools and community

Ecademy has two dimensions to it. On one hand Julian Bond and Glenn Watkins have created the most amazing set of tools to enable you to 'use' Ecademy effectively. On the other hand, Ecademy is a community, somewhere that you can feel you 'belong'.

Let me explain this using an analogy:—

I used to work in High Wycombe in the 1980's, a town in the UK, built up, it had drug problems and massive graffiti and was perceived to be a dangerous place at night. Did I care? No — because I drove there in the day, left in the evening, 'used' the facilities, and didn't have any relationships with anyone there. It was a 'tool' to enable me to earn money.

However, my home was Farnham, a small market town;I loved it, cared about it and wanted it to be safe, caring and clean. I felt I belonged there, in fact 18 years on and we still live there;I have invested time in running clubs in Farnham, helping others and the love, help and care I have received has made me very happy. I also have a brand in Farnham, people know what I do, and my life revolves around me using the 'tools', shops, offices, newspaper, roads etc, but also about caring for the community.

Ecademy is the same, you can 'use' it and visit it, get what you want from it, and it will satisfy some of your needs without doubt, but you can also contribute to it, care for people, take part in its community, and in time, you will reap rewards that you never thought were possible for you and your business.

So, how do you learn the tools and learn how to be part of the Community?

I guess like most things you have to dive in and get wet, get very wet, feel scared, feel vulnerable and go though the pain barrier to get to the other side. BUT, if you don't, what then?

The internet is not going away. Social Networking is becoming common place. You need to be found in Google, and you do need friends in wide, random ways. I would say learning is not an option — you can chose to procrastinate, but it will only get tougher, and unless you plan to retire in the next 3-5 years, the Internet and Social Networking is something you have to learn in order to compete with the bright and connected young people that are coming up fast behind you. No one is immune; everyone needs to have a brand as an expert, have a voice, and be found.

I realise I sound very forceful about this, but let me tell you that it took us eight and half years to get to the first 100,000 members at Ecademy, and in less than 10 months, we doubled that. This is scaling, we are not doing anything different to get more members, members are finding us as they can feel the beat!

The tools we supply for you to 'use' go from basic tools through to advanced:—

The basic ones are having a Profile page, Blogging, listing in MarketPlace, sending messages, searching for people, you will know these fairly quickly.

Then we get into more advanced, creating a Club, setting up meetings, that can be chargeable, setting up Search Alerts so we can push the information and people to you when it arrives, managing your contacts, the list goes on...

Additionally we have created the Ecademy Digital School

Ecademy Digital School Logo

A place to 'find an Ecademy Digital Coach' or maybe become one and help us spread the knowledge and close the skills gap that is so apparent in the business market.

We also have over 500 offline events and meetings each month on the calendar, so you should be able to meet people near you, or search them out. The main thing to break through is your motive for learning and spending time on this — that is the reason for my Blog, and if you want to contact me directly, I will be very happy to help you personally.

To get more involved in the community, just do exactly that, be who you are in the offline world, show an interest in others, read their profile, and ask them questions. The questions you will ask them usually reflect your expertise — funny that, isn't it?

So I want to start to build my brand, now what?

You can build your brand in many ways on Ecademy, find the way that suits you. You can do it in a public way, through commenting and writing Blogs, or you can join Clubs that interest you. You can use the MarketPlace do advertise and you can send Private Message to connect with people and get to know and like them.

If you decide to Blog, write about what you care about, but don't broadcast — start a conversation. Create a discussion, give others a platform to share your thoughts and add theirs — you do not need to own your space, as sharing it will bring more people to you, and will endorse you as The Expert. When you list in MarketPlace, get across your difference, and what happens to the customers you have when they have consumed your service. When you receive random messages, don't dismiss them, help those who send them as they will then help you. Treat people politely, warmly and with care — we are all vulnerable in one way or another, and your self esteem and self worth will rise the nicer you are to others.

Know Me, Like Me, Follow Me

In 2009 I wrote a book to help business people learn how to be successful inside Social Networks

Called Know Me Like Me Follow Me for a good reason, we want you to become Known, Liked and Followed.

You will see that we take you on a journey when you join Ecademy, provided through our e-leanring tools, you can see what you need to do to utilize Ecademy to the fullest with a thermometer on your profile that shows you how Know, Liked and Followed you are, represented by the tasks we set you.

To simplify this

Know Me is about becoming Known and utilizing the Broadcasting Tools of Social Media, - Blogging, YouTube, SlideShare, Twitter, to name a few

Like Me is about having conversations and engaging with people, don't forget to do this, don't be in a hurry all the time, take time to share and converse and show an interest in other people's Blogs and messages

Follow Me, this happens when people Know and Like you but critically they understand WHY. To achieve followers you need to be leading something so we ask that you think about what are you passionate about, what is your message, legacy and how do you deliver this though your business - this opens up the 'emotional business you' which means it opens up your heart to others and they will like that.

The advice I have given here will help you to create the advocates and friendships that will help you though your business life, it will also make the journey to your goals a great deal more enjoyable.

I hope you have enjoyed this, it is a long read, written with such passion and with the hope that this really makes a difference to you and your business.

Thank you Penny for this summary of the wisdom contained within 'Know Me, Like Me, Follow Me'. I have just re-read your book and found it inspirational, as I did on the first re-reading at the beginning of this year. The metaphor of someone spending as much time as possible in their flame has remained with me since first encountering Ecademy at the Digital School, as has your guidance to remain true to your core process. I am looking forward to continuing to do more of both in 2012.

Using Social Networking to grow your business

I have had a terrible experience with Ecademy. I had an account, Carol Cross, PhD. I decided to upgrade to Power Networking. I changed my email address from sagwtrees@gmail.com to solarentrep@comcast.net. The confirmation email never came and they deleted sagwtrees from Ecademy. So I have spent several days trying to get into that account. So I went in through facebook and discovered my account had been eliminated. They put me in a new account with none of my data and kept saying I should upgrade. Here is the email they sent me saying I had upgraded. It has been a nightmare. The people at comcast said maybe you had blocked them out. That turned out not to be true after 2 chat room sessions. I used someone else account sending the same email over and over trying to find a solution. I can't get into my old account because it has been eliminated. Below is the email you sent me on December 22. Is there anyone who can help me? Has anyone else had a similar problem? If so please contact me at sagwtrees@gmail.com Carol Cross, PhD The Ecademy Team sally@ecademy.com to me show details Dec 22 (3 days ago) Dear Carol Congratulations and thank you for powering up your network! Dear Julian Thank you for your comment, really appreciated and very rewarding. Many people approach the Internet with a 'how to' attitude, focused on learning the technology and not spending time asking 'why?' or 'who am I online?' We have created a School now to teach this and create Ecademy Digital Coaches www.ecademydigitalschool.com Perhaps one day you might like to ask a Coach for help, or even become one! I am so happy I have helped you get context through this Blog. Have a great Sunday. Warm regards Penny Power +447771 543478 Founder-Ecademy Supporting Business People

Hi Penny, This has to be one of the most sensible pieces of advice written about social networking and I love the "being in your flame" the other thing about the flame is, it is a source of illunination and I have been enlightend by reading your post. Lets just say I have had a homer moment Doh!, I most certainly have been approaching the social networking aspect of online business in the wrong way, (the pitch and push, what can I get out of it method) previously to being here and it has become extremely tiresome and laughable, thinking back. I look forward to learning more and contributing in some way. So far, I like what I see. I would advise anyone and everyone that isn't a member of these site's, you might wish you were! Get the word out about what you are doing ! This is the best way to do it. Using Social Networking to grow your business

Mark, this is a wonderful honest comment and one that I know the majority struggle with I think the greatest aspect of any communication is to understand what value you can be to the other person, I use empathy to achieve this in my world because I can only know my value by seeing the value others seek and feel thier pain. If I cannot solve thier 'issue' I will know someone who can, hence I guess my desire to build Ecademy and our ongoing desire to perfect this though BlackStar Boardrooms. You are a terrific networker Mark, plus you are a really good person, I trust you, I like you and I feel your passion for life when I am with you. I also feel your frustration. To me those two aspects of you, your passion and your frustration are two very exciting opportunities as they show you are alive and enthusiastic about life. Channeling your enthusiasm so that others gain from it is your challenge So I guess you should take time to reflect on all the people you have helped, all the people that like you and want to spend time with you and consider - 'what is that quality you have' and how can that be channeled into a business message that creates a following We will get there Mark - together. Using Social Networking to grow your business

As for others, here, Penny, this is a great guide and timely reminder for me, too. Thank you For me it is the inward looking questions that have always been the hardest to answer. In fact, as you know, I'm still struggling to create what you highlight as the point of departure for the journey into the social web - You rightly state Your brand is everything about YOU and it is this question "Who Am I" that is possibly the most vexing. I'm not sure if others struggle with this so brutally as I. At nearly 50 (next Jan) I'm really still unclear. When my world fell apart, over night, I asked what, for me, are life's three, key questions. Who are you What is your gift What is your purpose It doesn't help that I'm an 8 on the Enneagram as one of the traits is that I am invisible to myself and completely blind to how others see me. I am settled and comfortable with the last two, but I still struggle with the first Therefore when I try to answer that all important question, I simply look into a void. Without truly answering that question, as you point out, I'm at risk of just making noise instead of presenting an authentic, valuable and helpful brand that people would value to follow. By helping others, through my training, to Unleash Their Courage in stressful, face-to-face business networking and helping them to be more confident and effective, I am unquestionably in my flame. It is nourishing. However in trying to answer that pivotal 'who am I question' I am trapped in my wax. If I am not alone (other 8's will readily associate with this), then perhaps the two greatest challenges we will all face in bringing onboard a wider adoption of social media amongst small business owners across the UK and indeed, everywhere, is helping others, not yet engaged, to take that difficult look, inwards, to ensure they create their true, personal-branding and to help give them courage outwards to overcome the fear of engaging with the technology. As you know, I struggle with both Regards Mark Perl markperl.com

Penny, it's always interesting and illuminating to read your ideas and comments. Since you're monitoring this thread I want to ask your help with resolving an Ecademy problem I've been having for many months: my name is being used by your automatic propaganda tools to invite people to Ecademy when I have never agreed to be used in this way. Can you please get my name off that roster? I have written to others in Ecademy about this problem with no success. One of your moderators told me I was imagining this because Ecademy never uses people's name in this way. Yet, every month I get an invitation - from myself - to join Ecademy. I love Ecademy but don't wish to be a public evangelist for membership, especially in light of the fact that my endorsement is being offered against my wishes and after 7 or so months of trying to get this put right, noone in your organization until now has been willing to help me. Dear Mrs. Power, Thank you for this. I am just now starting to escape my wax, and it's seeming like a hard climb. This was very inspirational and just reading it helped renew my energy. Tha part I like the best was "the attraction zone". This was amazing advice, and I printed a copy to keep by my computer. Knowing who you are is sometimes difficult, and being who you are in uncertain circumstances can be just as difficult I think. Thank you especially for this. Many thanks, Dave

Using Social Networking to grow your business

Dear Terry and Geoff Thank you for your questions. Everyone has their own 'take' on how to make social networks work for their business, you will find many 'experts'. I am very happy to giver you my view and I suggest you also take up Chi's offer above as opinions from others will help you make your mind up on what feels right for you. Here is my opinion: In 1998 I created Ecademy to connect business people with one anoter, this was 6 years before LinkedIn and FaceBook, so I was developing a new idea at the time. Although it wasn't really new. I have always believed in friendship in business, I liked the old world where business people in a small town used to meet up at their local wine bar on a Friday night and share stories, concerns, ideas, opportunities with one another and from those untargeted, unconditional conversations some would get known as 'the good guys' who were the ones who listened, shared, supported and showed friendship. Amazingly (or not) those were also the ones with the successful businesses, the pipeline of leads, the ones that people referred business to. What I created with Ecademy was a machine with a heart, a place where you could have conversations online that mimicked the wine bar. On Ecademy you can comment on Blogs, as you have, you can create your own Blog, as thousands do here, and you can become visible to a global community, all the people on Ecademy are in business, the average age is 42. Unlike FaceBook, and unlike LinkedIn. Ecademy is a community of like minded people, a network of businesses that help one another and listen, share and support. To be successful you have to listen, share and support and then you will become known as the 'good guys' here too. I am happy to help you further a skype or phone chat. I can explain the SEO benefits of MarketPlace, offline BoardRoom Events as a BlackStar and how to build your network. Ecademy is very different to FaceBook, Twitter and LinkedIn and I advocate you learn to use them all, interacting on Ecademy will help you learn how. We exist to make you successful whereever we can direct you to that will help the most. Ecademy will become your 'home' online, where you can be yourself, learn and develop your skills for the online world. You will also gain business here, but as a friend, not as a marketing machine! I have also written a book called Know Me, Like Me, Follow Me' which I have received some awesome messages about from all over the world. Good luck and a Happy New Year. Warm regards Penny Power +447771 543478 Founder-Ecademy "Sharing People and Sharing Knowledge"

Using Social Networking to grow your business

Penny, Good article. Very inspiring. But I have a question. Actually, it's more of a puzzle. Because I have joined a few social networks now and it's always the same. Once I've joined, updated my profile, looked around the site, what next? I just don't have a clue what to do next. Same thing with facebook. And what if there is nobody on my email I want to invite? Earlier in the article you said to 'dive in'. How? Dive into what exactly? I think what I need, not just for ecademy, but for all of these sites, is step-by-step guide to how to network with people on a social networking site. A list of actions. Is there such a guide? I think there should be. It seems to me it's just assumed that you should know what to do. Surely I'm not the only person who just doesn't have a clue on how to get started and how to network with others. Terry Dunn

Fantastic read. This has really picked me up this morning :) I will take all of your advice with heed. I liken social networking to planting a bonsai tree seed, from planting, nurturing, feeding, watching it grow, but most importantly, not letting it get out of control and make sure the leaves and branches you've grown stay neat and tidy and are well looked after. Dear Penny Power, I just finished reading your article about 10years of ecademy. Really, it was painstakingly, done, but happy to see the blooming tree. To be frank, as a woman, and U being a fellow woman, I feel it is just like a childbirth, and the happy pain of the mother, in the time of pregnancy and thereafter. But when we see the child, and its smile, we never think or feel about those painful days at all. the smile and playful nes of the child, makes us so. Similar, is the mood in U. And we feel overjoyed, when our child outgrows and outsmarts us, in everyway. I never feel jealousy at all in this forum. Only, HELPING HAND and guidance , FROM WHEREVER, I HAVE ASKED, AS U had said. Though, I am a member for more than a year, I am active, in the last two or three months only. and replying to blogs etc from this month only. I am slowly learning, just as a small child walks. So, soon, i will be running around, I will be used to it once. Surely, a nice place to be in, and wonderful people all around, and we see the members from whole world in this Ecademy, vying with eachother, in lending a helping hand. As one, who wants to start a business, this place has given me confidence and lot of boost towards that direction. Wishing U best & Success. Yours, Alamelu

Using Social Networking to grow your business

Dear Penny, I learned something today about social business networking because of the blog you wrote. I never would have seen it if I had decided to take the time and navigate the site to find out what I might be missing here. Not only was it informative, I think it has caused me to step back and take a look at what I am doing and why. I have been in business for almost 15 years. I had a very successful Art Gallery and Custom Framing business on a mojor corridor here in Philadelphia That lasted about 2 years and then the city started some infrastructure work that put my business as well as about 600 other businesses on life support. The entire corridor has been closed for 10 years now. I have been trying to recover every sense. It has not been easy. Because the traffic was gone, I had to move to another location that has not been nearly as good.In fact it has been a disaster. I decided to start a business online because I realized that my customer is now seating in front of a computer screen. This is how I became aware of social/business networking. I have been trying to navigate my way through this process but it can be so overwhelming. I don't think I have been using my time constructively. I am going to take a step back, digest what you have said and determine the best way to proceed to get what it is I do want from this process. I want to be the light. Thank you for the insight and genuine information about what it is we are really doing here. LaReine

Hi Penny, Thank you very much for contacting me and bring me to read your blog, its really inspirational. But first thing first i have to forgive myself to become as an expert like you because i am just a novice newbie in social media marketing and feel like a lot of things to do and read, because i have just recently joined LinkedIn, Perfect Networker, AdlandPro Cimmunity, Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Friendfeed, YouTube, etc. So as a novice newbie what i am doing: 1.Learning what i am doing. 2.Planning what i have learned. 3.Organizing what i have planned. 4.Controlling what i have organized. And i have to do all that step by step, thats it! Thats is why i have to forgive myself, the best thing about me is i have prepared a website, you can take a look at: http://www.twitter.com/FreeSpam and my link there as: http://www.linkedin.com/in/fathirbasalamah so you can also check my website at: http://fajarhamdijaya.tripod.com/ By the way i am not finishing my profile at Ecademy yet, bur i will soon. I agree with the idea and the intention that you presented in this blog, but can you have it in a condense version for the people who need to find out quickly what is ecademy all about and the step by step procedure how to start out with the ecademy. Simple and condense, if it is too much information for the old school people like most of the people in the world, then this would never get their further interest, and maybe you don't need more members like the old behind time folks into this social network anyway. My reply is to Kathy Wornicki, who commented on the flame and how important it is to stay in it. It is so good to reread that part from time to time. It is not that I lose the passion, far from it, but it is so easy to get busy doing things and forget to look at the greater plan. I just discovered that this is one place where free members can have a say and start new connections. I learn as I go along to take advantage of opportunities to broaden the circle. Using Social Networking to grow your business

GORILLA business SUMMARY! Gorilla Millions Business Summary Gorilla Millions has the most popular business tools you can get with our page rotator, url redirect, reseller tools and other great member features. The cost of membership for GM is 1/5 the cost if you were to purchase all these tools seperately! But that's only the beginning, you get paid to refer others to Gorilla Millions and it could make you rich! You are allowed up to 2 positions, you can only get extra positions once at sign up. Why do we offer you up to 2 positions? We want everybody to be able to earn in up to 2 of our bonus pools with absolutely no outside sponsoring. As you can see, our viral commissions were created for networkers by networkers! Two positions will still show up as one complete membership! If you have a double GM Membership we are keeping track of your memberships internally. You will see in commission breakdowns and commissions we will be sending out beginning in July for our first company bonus pool runs and all members with doubles will be paid according to our compensation plan. Our Company Genealogy Shows all of our members the progress of the entire team getting pre enrollles, upgrades and promoting GorillaMillions. It is a picture of the entire company and is NOT TO BE CONFUSED for a downline or matrix view! If you have any questions about how the pay plan works, its simple and completely diagrammed on your Income Page of the Home and Tour pages listed in your welcome email and members area. If you lost your welcome email it's hyperlinked for your review again in our members area. We will also be adding a members update link for updates we will send out to you in case of e-mail blocking. (coming soon). Please check back regularly in the members area for changes and special announcements! We also give you member bonuses from time to time absolutely free! We suggest you start using our redirect URL and page rotator fast... then learn how to use the other tools as you can. Our reseller program can create income streams like you have never seen before so don't miss out! It can put you up on Google and other search engines with your own reseller program where you earn 100% commissions on all sales and more! We will be adding many new promotion tools for you as we grow, prelaunch is now through the end of September 2008. During prelaunch log in at least once a week to see what's new in your members area! Also please don't forget to watch for announcements as we add our commission paying modules and processors! Please don't spam your website. Promote with a conscience. Spam complaints will result in immediate termination. There are no second chances. When you promote a system like ours responsibly, you can build a huge residual income and earn tons of fast start $20 bills every month. To Promoters: We will be paying out more than the usual in renewal commissions, the reason we developed it as a bonus pool are two fold: One it goes with our theme and two we can actually payout MORE to those who DO MORE. If we can be of any assistance please use our Help Desk, our staff is full time and very knowledgeable of our systems. You can also reach the admin at admin@Gorilla Millions.com Enjoy your affiliation with us and we look forward to sending out some hefty commission checks and payments to all of our great members! Using Social Networking to grow your business

Thanks Penny, I am a member of ecademy only a short while, and allready found some very interesting people. Actually some very interesting people found me in the first few days since I have placed my profile on ecademy. The importance of networking is very clear to me, but I only did it in real life. And of course I only managed to meet a small number of people per day. And not every day because there is also work waiting on my desk. This digital network is groing even when I sleep. All I have to do is to invest 1 hour per day on ecademy to answer messages and contact people. I can only hope this network will continue groing, and is gaining business for many people. This way the crisis as we see it today will be turned around into a solid economic situation. I believe this only can be done by people who care about other people, and are ready to build bridges between cultures. The day you started ecademy, you started working on a better world. Whenever you visit the Netherland please find some time to shake hands with me. Best regards, Willem van Drunen www.nrco.nl

Using Social Networking to grow your business

Hello Penny and all other members of the community. When i first started looking at Ecademy i was sceptical, thought that it was just another internet guru trying to sell me something that i did not understand what it was, how to use it and most of all if it would be of any use to me at all. I have never worked for myself before and am terrified about it. I certainly have never worked through the medium of the internet before, i didn't even know that you could lol. I can see now after reading your blog and everybody's responses that this is different. Thank-you for shedding a bit more light on what is going on here. I have always been successful in my trade as a decorator but after my brain injury 6 years ago i have had to re-evaluate my life and how i am going to get back to work again and not feel like something that has been thrown onto the scrap-heap. I came accross Lesley who is one of the founder's of popwebcity while i was on a forum about working from home and she has set me up as the sole U.K. end of the business. What can i say? It has started to restore my faith in humanity on the whole. Then i come accross Ecademy and you and all the other member's of the community seem to be the same type of people thank-you. Your blog was in-spirational and has given me a lift just when i was starting to get into the mind set that this was just another thing that i had failed at Thank-you and Happy New Year to every-body Richard Moore popwebcity.co.uk

Awesome vision Penny, exactly how we feel about business networking and entrepreneur ship. In far too many cases businesses are trying to get ahead by just taking not realising that by doing that they are burning their wax and all to often their bridges! Networking goes both ways it's a win win exchange. We apply Rodger Hamilton's principles in our lives (businesses, relationships) too and that is when you start too see what true wealth is about and how rich (read enriched) we already are because anyone can give and the more you give the more it comes back in abundance! Penelope Herbert Dear Penny, I found your writing really useful in order to gain from and give to Ecademy. I am new to social networking on-line but quite adept in person. It was useful for to understand that the techniques and 'heart' are the same. I also have a new on-line business and promoting that via the internet, not traditional marketing, is also a challenge so understanding better your background was valuable. Since becoming a member of Ecademy just a couple of weeks ago, I have been introduced to so many vibrant and talented people I never knew existed. It's a big wide world and it's also a village. I admire your vision in starting Ecademy and your passion in keeping it going and growing. As I become more familiar with Ecademy, its workings and its people, I hope to make a valuable contribution by sharing my expertise with others to enable them to achieve their visions, and also learn many many things that will help to enhance and grow my business too. Congratulations for providing such a forum; I hope our Underdog Marketing Challenge can be similarly as dynamic and affecting. Warm wishes, Penelope

Penny, Thank you for your comments here. I just joined Ecademy on Saturday and really started getting into it late yesterday. I am also spending some time today trying to figure out more about it. I like what you say about our flame. I think of it as being in the zone or being in flow as some have termed it. When I am in a state of flow - in my flame - it is almost as if the passage of time ceases. What I mean by that is I am so focused on what I am doing that I do not even realize time is passing. For me, being in my flame is about doing something that I would do even if I had to pay others to do it rather than get paid for doing it. I realize from reading your post that I need to work on my brand offline and outside of Ecademy to tune it up. I suppose it is a process. Thanks again. I look forward to being involved in Ecademy over the coming months and years and being a benefit to others as I am sure they will be to me. Best regards. JWS

Using Social Networking to grow your business

Wow, Penny. A very friendly and warm, heart-centered fellow who eats even faster than I do recommended ecademy to me, so I checked it out. My first few seconds included a lot of auto-friending from people who did not appear to have much in common with me, save that they are white men who like computers and want to get hired. None of these affiliations are on my to-exploit-via-social-networking list (even getting hired, unless there's a very tight match) so I zipped back to my profile and threw up all these warning flags that said, in effect, DON'T WASTE MY TIME! LEAVE ME ALONE! Then I read your post above, and was blown away by your gift of presentation, and the sophisticated warmth of your educational vision. We are of a kind - putting integrity and collaborative education first, business second. I trust you and like you, just because of what you wrote and how you wrote it. That's all. -Bram

Thanks Penny, At last, a welcoming network with real people. Your comments about network events where people throw out business cards but achieve nothing particularly resonated with me. I've just returned to the UK after 4 years in Dubai where this exact behaviour was innate. I'd attend events (even informal birthday parties) and come home with a fistful of business cards feeling more lonely than ever. Nobody wanted to talk to anyone- heavens forbid - this would use up valuable card distribution time. I look forward to meeting some (many) interesting, warm and genuine people and I know that by doing this I cannot fail to learn and develop along the way. Janice Barnett www.pathfinderscoaching.net

Hello Penny, Thank you for having the vision to create such a excellent platform for people around the world to connect. I love it when you say, "Learning is not an option." And I tend to believe that strongly. Learning is a lifelong mission. Over more than 3 years, I have been learning more about myself through books, audio cds, seminars, workshops and meeting new people. And recently, I have a much more stronger purpose in my life. Prior to that, I have never thought of moving forward in life as I don't have much paper qualification to show. To be part of a community where there are a lot of positive vibes is just a dream for me. I just love the positive environment that may not be present in my day to day activities. Cheers Khairudin

Inderjit Kashyap Hello Penny, 1. Greetings & Good wishes from NOIDA(UP), India, where I am residing as a retired Army Officer of the Indian Armed Forces, with my wife, son, daughter-in-law & a yr & a half grand daughter. 2. Am a very recent entrant to Ecademy & have already received responses from some members soon after posting my profile, that too partly. These responses have reaffirmed my admiration for the evolving article by you. Ecademy, is surely a vibrant organisation whose members are ever keen to interact & get to network with each other irrespective of their locations of residence, thus benefitting doubly, firstly & more importantly, getting to know someone from a foreign land hence unknown eearlier & if it so happens that the businesses compliment each other, grow in that facet too. 3. You have, in clear & frank words explained your idealologies & convictions of life that U have been honestly practising too. It is indeed a great value to let others benefit from one's experiences if they feel convinced. This is also been done without asking for anything in return, something not usual in today's materialistic world. All the kudos are rightlfully deserved!!! 4. Am trying to find my feet in Ecademy enviroment & hope to adapt soon. Having always had a leaning for getting to know more & more people, am hoping to expand the networking too. Will seek help & guidance when stuck, but the resolve is there to be useful to this organisation. With Regards, Yours Sincerely, Inderjit Kashyap

Thanks Penny. Vast networks like Ecademy with such incredible people on it are really humbling, and daunting. "Lets face it, what you do is not interesting. Sorry. Thank you Penny for such a wonderful article. I love the 'flame' analogy and you have also confirmed for me the intent of Ecademy. That is that it is intended for members to build relationships first, not just to make connections for the purpose of launching into a sales pitch. I think my favourite part is this:- "Networking is about being talked about when you are not in the room. Networking is about building close relationships with others, and making sure they really understand your value — this will enable others to be your advocate. If you do not create this environment for yourself, then networking will be no different to telesales..." Thank you again. Thanks Penny for such an inspiring word. Having only recently discovered social networking I have found that it is a great tool to enable me to be intimate online, in a controlled way. I only need expose as much of me as I feel comfortable with. And your technical team have done a great job of linking and incorpoarting with the established social networking tools. People almost get to know my daily routine from my Twitter which updates my net news and they get to know my thinking from my blog, again in my net news, before they have even met me. Already they have a more intimate understanding of who I am and we haven't even met. This is much more conducive to linking up than just my contacts and work description and history, as important as they are. Thank you again fo your inspiration and making this possible Martin

Mitchell L Gold Thank you Penny for the opportunity to share with this network. I am not too clear on how your economics works but as I understand it , I can use this for free. Sometimes free is too expensive. I have reviewed a number of comments that people that have responded and applauded this service. I too will applaud it if it works for me and does what I need. I have a compelling program that is based upon social artistry, and the transformation that we social artists are going through. In some economies we are referred to as the Cultural Creatives, although myself I find that a misnomer - even though we do exist. Not all Cultural Creatives are social artists. To keep my blog simple I suggest that all people involved with this network will benefit greatly by our homeplanet MBA program. Learning what you do not know that you do not know. You can still do you "Secret" or your "Mastermind" or your this or that program - this is not instead of, rather this is value added - it brings a certain harmony to what you have already learned - and takes the mystery out of it - wrong - it puts the "great mystery " back into your work. GO to homeplanet.org and register - 20% on all referrals and a further 10% on all second level referrals. In our theory - even though this service is free, Our program will reward Penny with 20% on all referrals that register through Ecademy. Normally we require our Brand to be highlighted on the referral service. and we normally sign an agreement. HOwever in this case since it is free - we will still have our referral structure in place. Hope this works for Penny and her family. Peqace Mitch Gold. P.S. do not miss our video clip on Good and evil.

Using Social Networking to grow your business

* I really enjoyed this article. So much so that I emailed it to myself to read it again. I realized early on that customers don't like to feel like you are "better than them", so as a course of my interactions with customers I try to find out things about them that are cool and interesting... that way I can ask them things about themselves and what they like (on and off the job) and let them know that I respect them for what they do. In Yachting this is not hard to do, as being a Captain or 1st Mate on a 100 foot + yacht (for that matter smaller ones and private owned/captained yachts) is not an easy thing to accomplish. They maneuver 100's of thousands or Millions of Dollars of Vessel with an ease that only comes with training and lots of experience. If they weren't Experts at it... the owners of the vessel would never let them untie the boat from the dock. I try very hard not only to help, through my products and services (and articles online), to not only HELP my customers to accomplish their needs and/or desires, but also to try very hard to Educate them so that they can do things (with my products and services and related "things") on their own. This not only makes them happy and feel like they got something extra, but it also cuts down on the support time I have to spend with them. If I write a support contract, obviously I want to hear from them - with their issues and problems, but I also have to multi-task working on boats and working with multiple customers. So it's a double bonus to educate them and have them at least somewhat self sufficient. Penny, I think you're doing the same kind of thing on here. Educating people... making them self-sufficient, while keeping in touch with them, and encouraging them to get in touch and keep in touch with others. It's a great thing! Just reading the first few paragraphs again is inspiring and helps refresh that first impression we all had when we read this for the first time. Then I stop and make sure I put this into practice. Using Social Networking to grow your business

The future of social networking in business. I actually regard the above statement as a little redundant. Social networking as a non-technological concept has been present in business since the first cave man wandered over to his mate Ugg's cave and said something like 'Hi, shall we hunt some big hairy foodie stuff together and flog it to the lot in the next valley?' Facetious maybe but a fair supposition. Social networking just 'is' and in a business context it is essential. With regard to the recent explosion in technologically driven social networking for business I genuinely believe there is some confusion. I am however happy to concede that this confusion exists in my own mind. I am always happy to listen and learn so please help me out. There are many sites out there, some of which you can argue are purely about networking socially. Facebook, Bebo, MySpace etc. There are also some amazingly good sites aimed at the business user (and note my careful differentiation) LinkedIn and Ecademy spring easily to mind. The former has huge presence and mass membership but seems to be heavily used as a recruitment arena primarily. The latter has a smaller membership but a hugely focussed group of people endeavouring to help one another; in fact, as I write, there is a poll going on Ecademy designed to determine whether Ecademy member are looking to develop their business (knowledge, resources, ideas) or to develop sales (look for customers). My confusion with this deepens as I was always of the opinion that to develop your business you have to sell stuff. The other stuff is essential of course, you can't sell when you don't have some knowledge, resources and ideas but you can't sell if you don't, well, sell. I have read a bunch of comments following the blog containing the poll and there is a good deal along the lines of (obviously not a direct quote) 'Dear me, sell to my fellow members? That would be awful!' My question would be, if you are using a business related social network, why not sell stuff? The answer which seems obvious to me is that if you do, then you risk annoying a lot of people who are not there to buy anything, they are there to sell but may be being too polite to ask! Please don't misunderstand me, Ecademy is a tremendous concept, I am a member and have been for a long time. It does some great work. What it doesn't seem to be though is a forum for people to go to to buy and sell things. Not a criticism in any way. So, how do you sell stuff? The obvious answer is to do all your normal marketing things and not forget the internet. Do your website well, us search engine optimisation and Google and whatever else to drive people to your site. All well and good but if you are selling bathrooms in London, you will be competing with hundreds or thousands of others doing just what you are doing and you will be swapping page rankings as fast as you can pay your SEO people to keep you at the top of the searches. So far, I suppose, all well and good. People who want to talk about doing business without actually doing any are well catered for. People who want to find other people either just to talk to or to find to fill jobs in their talent base are equally well catered for. People who want to go to a search engine and plough through a gazillion entries to find a new bath tap; well we know they are well catered for and we know how to 'trick' the search engines so they always find us (until your competitors get a little bet at trickery than you that is!) So what is missing, well for me, it has been the ability to go to 'somewhere' and say 'What I really, really need right now is.....some bright shiny new bath taps' and I haven't been able to do that. The whole concept of Web 2.0 with its inherent creativity, sharing, social networks, blogs and so forth haven't given me any way to shout, 'Hey world, I need some stuff' and get some people I know who are good at selling stuff to come to me. I guess that's why we started WeCanDo.BIZ!

Using Social Networking to grow your business

Dear Penny, Thank you for your excellent post, I couldn't agree more with what you said. Social Networking is the latest revolution in Marketing, & it's going to get even bigger. Never before has there been such an opportunity to reach a global community, almost instantly. I have been an Estimator/Sales Executive for variousprinting companies over the last 12 years. Four months ago I took the plunge and formed my own Printing Agency, Spencer Print. During that time I have learn a great deal about Social Networking from Internet Marketing Gurus like Eben Pagan, Frank Kern, Jeff Walker, & companies such as StomperNet, & Traffic Geyser. They have given me some useful pointers, such as how to submit your blogs and articles to over 120 Social Networking sites. This can be done by going to http://www.socialmarker.com Video is also becoming more powerful as an internet marketing medium. Increasingly, viral videos hosted on video hosting sites such as YouTube, Blip TV, & Google Video are appearing in the top search engine results on Google. There is a service that uploads your Viral Videos automatically to over 30 Video Hosting sites, and too all the major Social Networking sites. In addition, they also convert it to a viewable format for mobile phones, & strip the audio for Pod Casts. The service is available at www.TrafficGeyser.com The service is not free, but is a great way of driving traffic to your site. For more info on Social Networking, feel free to call me on 01432 870528. Don't get left behind in the Social Networking revolution. In the meantime, please feel free to visit my blog at http://spencerprint.blogspot.com The blog is mainly about "Environmentally Friendly Printing" and contains some funny videos about global warming, as well as useful "Green" printing articles and spec sheets on recylced papers. Hope to contribute something to this community. Many thanks, Mike Spencer Spencer Print http://www.spencerprint.co.uk

Thanks Penny: I am a member of many networking sites, but haven't come across one like this until now. It is refreshing to read how you conduct your business and work ethic. I have had my business on-line for only a few months. I am very green when it comes to on-line networking, but I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can, and meeting new people along the way. Like you said, it is very scary "out there", but I know I can do this. Some of the lingo is confusing, nativigating around is frustrating sometimes, but I have learned so much over the months that I feel like I can't get enough of it! I am so glad I stumbled onto this site - I think it was meant to be. Blessings and best regards, Connie Herzog - Partner Q1 Consulting Services, LLC www.q1consultingservices.com

Using Social Networking to grow your business

I have been a very recent visitor of one or two networking sites. I would like to participate mostly in business network. I have established good number of contacts for example on linkedin. But after having visited ecademy, i feel that this community is different than other networks. There seems to be a sense of belongingness and emotional attachment which are lacking in some of the other networks. Feels good to be here.

Using Social Networking to grow your business

Mitchell L Gold Greetings Penny: I have been a member for only a few minutes, and I can readily see this tool can be used for social good. The most important aspect of social good is to understand the term. Social good. I was at a Lawyers conference several weeks ago and social good was thought to be affecting 300 million people. I pointed out that social good reflects on 6.4 billion people. Clearly the individual agreed with me, but he had not considered that before. This is the conundrum of our day. How do we consider 6.4 billion people when we are having difficulty meeting our mortgage payments. The answer lies not in a specific action but rather a change in the way people think. Thomas Berry identified this as the Ecozoic Era. Myself I see that learning and adopting holistic thinking as a behaviour, thinking and action process may afford us all a chance of survival. "Survival" A community of all beings, interdependent, respectful Preserving Earth, the air, the water, and the soil Manifesting responsibility and individuality, Understanding that failure to do so has consequences Treating others as we wish to be treated Committed to respect, dignity, and individuality Developing an aptitude for forgiveness Learning from the past and renouncing hate Narrowing the differences for world community Humankind is our family Practicing kindness, generosity, serving others Honoring the children, the aged, the poor, the suffering Equal among equals, sexual and moral Putting behind us all forms of domination or abuse Commitment to non-violence, justice, and peace Achieving true social justice and economic order Speaking truthfully with compassion Moving beyond greed for power, money, and consumption The consciousness of individuals must change Before Earth can be changed Discipline the mind by meditation, prayer, or positive thought All are invited to share the experience of survival. This is what I wrote in 1995 after reading a 44 page summary document of an event identifying a Global Ethic. Today, I believe that those that use the term holistic in their day to day life ought to consider how this affects business. This is important. Business is required to shift away from the Milton Friedman model - (avoiding Corporate Social Responsibility) to embracing it. And how does one do this? Again, I am not sure. As my teacher has said, I can only take you to the door. You must consider wisely whether or not to open it, or to move on . I recommend that every citizen in this network consider registering in the Homeplanet MBA program at www.homeplanet.org. Working together we may have a chance. Things have not tipped too far yet. There is hope. Peace Mitch Gold

Using Social Networking to grow your business

Precious Penny, It was with delight that I read your introduction. I wrote a comment before, but managed to lose it. I will try to say it again.. Iwas in my flame when I did that,. as I just finished reading it, and yes, it is very inspiring. am intrigued by theproces of how ideas get born and then are propelled into fruiton. The exchange of ideas, as you say, has a lot to do with it. I like metaphor of the flame and the wax. There is a spark factor at work. One idea heard by another leads to another idea or improvement, that the first person would not have arrived at, not having the same experiences. You talk about match-making, How apt. The match connects the flame to the wax. Therefore you are the match that makes this possible. Pouff, and all lights up. I admire you for carrying this idea forward. It is so intuitive and normal. Yet to actually see this and bring it about is quite amazing. I can see the flame and the wax at work here between you - the flame - and those who designed the software - the wax. It is actually so much fun that I hope I will give myself the time to do this. I hope to make good use of it, though. Here I sit behind my computer, not knowing what to do first, but I will rake the coals and make sure the fire does not die. I will follow your guidelines - again they are easily recognizable as being simple and true. I thank you for this and wish you all the best. Warm regards, Iris ten Holder, Ottawa, Canada

Using Social Networking to grow your business

Dear Penny, Ok, now I get you. I did feel like Ecademy was different and I did notice how friendly the people were and how non pushy they were about what they do. I love how you drove home the point of not "thowing your business cards at people" as it really struck a cord with me. I am zealous about what I do for Stellar Enterprise and of course like everyone else want the world to know what we do and how it can benefit them but boy is it refreshing to mingle and feel the tingle rather than get coated with gooey pink spam. ahhh. I use many other social networks and I must honestly say that here I don't get the pink stuff and neither do I want to give it. We are developing a global online television network and will need to have studios were we can send guests to be interviewed with out traveling unless they have capabilities at home. I think if we all prepare for this we will be better suited for business in the future. I wanted to point out that we ultimately need to sell our products and there fore there is a need for a separate place to sell and where buyers can go. So we do have something cooking and I hope that those who need to "sell" as will jot down this website www.shopstellar.com If you want a sample of how it works just log on to StellarVision.Tv or the other site. I feel really good about Ecademy and hope to work with Lucas and propose a show to spread the word about Ecademy. Its different and now I know why. jouini houcine: thank you for the received message , I definitly agree with you , socializing and networking simplify a lot things and enlighten others direcly or indirectly to do better and to profit from each other's experience : that's learning , we learn from ours and others' mistakes . like children we fall and start up again with no offense , we learn by trial . the champions and successful people use this strategy to outpass setbacks and reach their targets . the marathon_man did the same even when thinking about the distance to run make it hard to fullfill at first sight .I hope to share my experience with the community and to profit as well from others . thanks / jouini houcine

Using Social Networking to grow your business

Dear Penny, Thank you so much for bringing clarity to me on ecademy values. I have joined 2 months ago and couldn't really say what I was doing here. We are used to have particular frames in life and it takes time to see what is behind something not ordinary. Your blog and your comments to me took me right to the heart. What took me most is the following: The fact is, you can do this in so many ways. Everyone needs to feel valued, to feel important, and to be worthy. Make everyone you 'touch' feel like that; this will say so much about you. The amazing part of this is that there is no such thing as an unselfish act — by helping others you are helping yourself, you will feel valued, you will feel helpful, you will have higher self esteem, and in this world, the battle isn't just for money, it is for emotional wealth too. I learned so much already and there is even more to discover! This is my 1st comment on ecademy. It feels good! Julia Abdulbarova http://mychoise.kgcnetworks.net +44782893674

Using Social Networking to grow your business

It is wonderful to see all the great comments since I last added my comment above, thank you. I am also thrilled to see Barbara Saul's note above, a strong member of Ecademy, she runs the Buddy and New Members Clubs, please do look them up (see above comment), they are great resources, maybe you wold like to be a Buddy, or would like help from one. A number of people have asked me to provide more insight into identifying your flame and what to do with your Wax, here are a few words about that... Identifying your Flame and Wax When working alone it can be incredibly tough to stay in your flame. To begin with, you really need to identify those moments of when you are in it and what you are doing. What is it that is making a difference to others beyond just your skills, what is the actual moment that you feel that 'tingle'. When you feel it, write it down and keep a log. Equally, when you are in your WAX, write that down too. Run a journal of this for a few days, or maybe a couple of weeks and look for a pattern. When you know the Flame, consider ways to expand on that, can you do it more often, can you re-create the moment more often, can you share it 121, or 1 to few, or 1 to many? Can you write it down in a Blog and share it, can you write a book and share it, how can you leverage it and grow it? When you know your WAX, what can you do to feel differently about it? Can you save your wax up and do it once a week, stop it from impacting your daily rountine and bringing you down, can you delegate it? It can be amazing how cheap it is to pass WAX to someone else to do, for them it may be their flame, therefore allowing you to leverage your flame and make more income. The great thing about Networking is you can find others who need your flame and find others who love your WAX, it is all about our differences, this is what makes us all so dynamic and strong together. Thank you once again to all those who have added their comments, I think I ave connected with all f you now, if not, please do send me a message if can help in any way. Thank you, Penny Definitely something to bring to the new and guest members club - being a place where fellow Ecademists can get used to this amazing place and ask questions that they're not sure about (and without feeling embarrassed to) and find useful advice and links that will set you on your journey here. There are many members that have a strong sense of Ecademy and are committed to making this a great place for as many as possible - helping others to "get it". Indeed, for those that want a bit more guidance than the New Ecademy Members club offers, there are Ecademy Buddies - fellow members that will gladly help and guide you - if you want to be put in touch with one, let me know by PM, or you can get in touch with a Buddy yourself - we're listed here. Using Social Networking to grow your business

The road to self employment is a rocky one; Penny's article is full of golden nuggets if choose to look for them. I recently attended a Richard White presentation. A couple of points he made stuck in my mind and I think are applicable to Penny's blog. One - if your objective is to seek sales at a networking event you will probably fail, if you do sell your product or service that's fantastic but hardly a realistic objective. People have to know you before they will buy from you. Your goal should be to seek introduces, individuals who can put you in front of the person looking for your product service offering. Two - learn about how you could help those you meet by asking questions and actively listening a strategy Marcus Cauchi rightly advocates who I might add is a prolific introducer as is Richard White. By all means tell those whom you meet about what you do after all an introducer needs to be able to sum up what you do in fifteen words or less. You may or may not know why you should do this so let me explain. You are applying a social rule sociologists' and anthropologists call the rule of reciprocation this rule applies across cultures. The rule requires that one person tries to repay, in kind, what another person has provided. If applied intelligently a win-win for both parties. I look forward to meeting you at the next London ecademy event. Christopher Bird MBA(Open), MCSE

Using Social Networking to grow your business

I recently attended a presentation/tutorial with Thomas on the broad subject of " Social Networking Business Strategy " and this prompted me to re-read Penny's article which has rightly received many supportive comments. I picked out of Penny's article the following statement. The tools we supply for you to 'use' go from basic tools through to advanced: — The basic ones are having a Profile page, Blogging, listing in MarketPlace, sending messages, searching for people, you will know these fairly quickly. Then we get into more advanced, creating a Club, setting up meetings, that can be chargeable, setting up Search Alerts so we can push the information and people to you when it arrives, managing your contacts, the list goes on... Penny's article was brilliantly timed, as was Thomas's course. What is becoming very clear at the moment is that you can not only use Social Networks to promote your " personal brand " ( as Penny points out ) but also your "business brand ". Ecademy is a powerful Internet platform on which to build your personal and business brand. Simplistically this is because it is ranked as one of the " busiest " websites in the world, in addition it is also well constructed to enable you to promote something/anything. Profile Page Thomas pointed out in his presentation that there were a few key elements to get right: 1. Your photo 2. Your fifty words 3. The first two lines of your profile and also that " you must think about your profile and content from the perspective of the people that are searching for information" I do not intend to go into this in great detail here but it is a fundamental piece of " New Internet thinking " to think like this. Some people who understand Internet Marketing and Search Engine Optimisation ( SEO ) understand this but it is a mindset that must be adopted by leading edge Social Networkers. Blogging I don't profess to be an expert on blogging but to me it is important to understand that Ecademy blogging is different from having a "one way blogging site". In such a site you will essentially be giving your view to people that come to your Blog site. In Ecademy you must expect debate of whatever it is that you post and you must be prepared for different views. These views and debates may well be found on the Internet via various Google searches. Again, more detail can be provided should it be required. Marketplace These postings are " one way " and can be controlled. Clubs Club descriptions can be one way postings but Forums within the Clubs and the discussions within these forums will be subject to views and debate. I point these things out because it was clear from Thomas's meeting that there were questions about this area and Penny raised the points. I believe that it is a generally held view that we need to provide more information on some of these topics and this is being addressed. Helping People Get Results

'What goes around comes around' - With your words surely will come 10 more years that are even better and while some 'just won't get it', many will... many will put their love, their kindness and their heart on this very kind and caring, professional 'web space' and they will get the same back. In time, as they learn to do what you are speaking of, they will see that something (including 'orders') will come to them... and they will be very rich, with or without money! Thanks Penny for what you did here... While there are many places to network and all should be used for their strengths, this is still the best place to base for heart, soul and business... and 'what goes around comes around' so I encourage everyone to start with a smile and a kind gesture... you'll be pleased, amazed and rewarded! Using Social Networking to grow your business

Penny, I think you hit the right note with your blogg. Two things that stood out for me that I thank your for. 1) It is funny how I can miss the things that are so obvious. I attended Roger Hamilton's 'Wealth Flight Weekend' over two years ago and this is where I got exposed to the wax and the flame concept. I and many others went off into a quest to 'find our flame' and live in it. It was like looking for the holy grail!. Suddenly the answer appears on your blogg. 'Your wax is someone else's flame, your flame is someone else's wax, wow!' All I have to do is to share my 'wax' (which I did not value too much in my search for my flame) - which can be of great value to another (their 'flame') ----- and I will get MY FLAME!. This is the very essence of social networking. 2) The importance of creating my own brand. In this world, we have been created unique --- yet we tend to want to become a member of the majority.... To blend in and get lost (comfort) in the crowd. It has taken me over 7 years in business to finally 'get it' about creating my own personal brand. It is of the upmost importance in both my business and my personal life. I believe that this the most important thing missing from most businesses that are struggling with no sense of direction. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart. Jack Yuen http://www.coachingforbalance.com.au Only for SME's who are looking to grow their businesses.

Using Social Networking to grow your business in Hong Kong

Hi Penny It has been a while since we connected electronically. Still remember our time in Bali with you and Thomas. Actually the book A Friend in Every City is one of the few book to make the trip from New Zealand to Hong Kong. Louise and I are now living in Hong Kong and running XL Results Foundation Hong Kong branch (www.resultsfoundation.com). It has dawned on me that I have been doing a lot of social networking though had forgotten to connect using this wonderful Ecademy. I had been doing face-to-face networking rather than online. Now here is where you may be able to help along with others in Ecademy. As you know XL is making a huge difference in the world through providing people with tools and opportunities to grow their businesses. It is also growing the social enterprise community as well through members contributing time and resources to their favourite charities and causes. Yes Business and Charities do need each other. We run regular events in Hong Kong for people that a keen to make a difference in this world. Who do you know in Hong Kong that is well connected and also making a difference that would love to hear about XL? Grow well Dr Merrin

Penny Great to hear from the founder what it feels like regarding social networking. Achieving a brand is basically following your heart where you can help people and social networking is a way to achieve that. I liked the bit about Farnham best. Social networking is basically about communicating with people and with the net, we have an electronic dimension to it. You said that networking and relationships should always be about what you can give to people, how you can help them (not the other way around, which is the way that some other networks focus). Just by saying that you gave me an extra boost of confidence. You see, despite giving speeches to international audiences regularly, I always felt a bit nervous before starting. By having the focus you gave me that my speaking slot was simply a wonderful opportunity to give a little gift to the 200 people in front of me, doing my best to help them, I felt totally calm (and excited!). It put me firmly into my flame. As sheer evidence of all that you spoke about, by having the absolute mindset that I was there to give as much as I could to others, I got more gifts back from them than I could have imagined! But here's the most memorable point... there was a man there that night that I did my speech who didn't take part in any of the exercises. He was firmly stuck in his wax! He was just there to get clients. At the end of my speech, having sat moodily in his chair all evening, he turned to the lady next to him and said, "Hello, you're the lady that works for company x (a big corporate) - I'd like to do business with you!" She replied, "Don't be ridiculous, we want to work with people who are here to 'take part' not people who are just here to take!" She then gave us a contract that sky-rocketed our business and connected us with like-minded businesses - people who are definitely in their flame. Penny - some people might think your comments above are too god to be true. I'm happy to know that you're absolutely right! Thanks again for the inspiration and leadership that this online community will thrive on. Best wishes, Richard

Using Social Networking to grow your business

Dear Penny Very valuable. In spite of being long, kept my attention to read it to the end. Below are the main points I highlighted to remember and apply more. Thank you! ....needing to feel useful to others, needing to answer business questions that we do not have the expertise to do, .... ....safe place with like-minded people and through this you will learn, develop and build a brand that you are proud of, a brand that is clear, reflects who you are and draws people and opportunities to you at the right time..... ....All these factors leads to your expertise, to your passions, and that leads back to your business, and to you as a person, that can be trusted, liked and to others caring about your success.... ....Treat Ecademy as your new community, your friend, someone that wants you to be successful and a place where you can feel safe asking for help, telling your story and gaining respect because, who you are, is an expert and someone who is living the dream of loving what they do.... ....The middle line is your attraction zone, when you are there everyone likes you, you are humble, patient, kind, relationships are good and you feel good..... ....When you are in your flame, you are on fire, you can light a million other candles without using any energy, you can shine brightly, you go home feeling energised, happy and know that you have contributed in the way you want to, money flows when you are like this.... .... To attract people to you, you need to shine, you need to feel positive, and you need to feel you are contributing..... .... Your wax is someone else's flame, your flame is someone else's wax, wow! .... .....Understanding the difference between tools and community.... .....use....belong.... everyone needs to have a brand as an expert, have a voice, and be found.... ....who you are? ....Why would someone want to know you? How can you make their life better? How can you help them?.... Everyone needs to feel valued, to feel important, and to be worthy.... 1. Who you are..2. What you do...3. Your expertise...4. How your expertise makes a difference to others...... Life is not just about features and benefits, it is about emotion too. I wonder what 'emotion' you give off; does it leave an impression of you?.... ....write about what you care about, but don't broadcast, create a discussion, give others a platform to share your thoughts and add theirs, you do not need to own your space, sharing it will bring more people to you and will endorse you as The Expert..... Treat people politely, warmly and with care.... ....Visability-Profitability-Credabilit....Networking is about being talked about when you are not in the room, building close relationships with others and making sure they really understand your value will enable others to be your advocate.... Dear Penny, Thank you for showing us all through what you wrote how we can each actually carry out the famous words of the great Mahatma Gandhi: "We must BE the change that we wish to see in the world"! I notice that my thoughts about growing community and it's importance are quite similar to yours. I spy with my little eye, signs of synchronicity occurring. I'm not a psychologist but from experience I agree with what Graham Jones wrote. I've had similar comments made about myself by others and I learned that what Graham wrote is actually a BIG compliment! Using Social Networking to grow your business

Hi Penny Yes, I agree with all of the above that this was a great blog. AND that it was a brilliant idea to start ecademy. It is the first time that I've felt at home in a formal networking environment. By nature of my current location (commuting between South Africa and Tanzania on a monthly basis) I don't exactly have access to face-to-face network meetings as you folks in Europe do, nor have I had any direct business results yet. However, I've gained something remarkably precious in this network. I feel that my intellectual and social isolation has been broken. I have met stimulating people - some like-minded folks who maintain contact on a regular basis (and I reciprocate) and some folks who don't seem to have anything in common with me other than their humanity and being members of ecademy, but mutually we have found something of value so the contact is maintained. I've gained something far more valuable than merely business contacts - I'm tapping into the brainpower of people around the globe - vast experience and insight, mine for the taking. For example, my HR consulting business in Tanzania (www.ascendHRservices.com) causes severe moodswings. I'm a person who is normally steady, cheerful, optimistic and all that good stuff. Yet, I can't sleep on the nights that I get an email from a potential new client wanting a proposal on a change management project, or team building, or goal setting training or whatever it is that they need that I can help them with. I find I dream the design of the solutions I want to email them in the morning, refining, refining, reworking. And then once it is written and its been emailed the wait comes. And then the swing goes the other way. I can't sleep because I'm not immediately hearing back from them. I fret that I'll never work again. And then the contract comes through and I barely need a seat on the plane to get to Dar because I'm on such a natural high - just can't wait to do the job. And when the job is over, the see-saw starts again. I start fretting and looking at job ads. THEN I read the opinion of an ecademician - unfortunately I can't remember the person's name. But she talked about how she had been discouraged by the advice of another ecademician that it takes at least 4 years for a new business to get off the ground and become profitable. She said she was going to prove it wrong and put a major effort into achieving profitability in 2 years. Suddenly I realised that what I was experiencing was ABSOLUTELY NORMAL. What is called for is STICK-T0-IT-NESS, not dusting off the CV to retreat back into the corporate world! Gradually it dawned on me that I'm beginning to get enquiries not from people who have been cajoled by my partner into using my services, but from people who were referred to me by PREVIOUS CLIENTS. I realised that I'd built up a small and loyal client base that was beginning to do some of my marketing for me. A satisfied client has got to be the best marketing tool in the world! (As you say, the doubling effect of the membership in ecademy - it has to do with members finding you members.) And then I also started looking more closely at the INCOMES/EXPENDITURES side of the business and to my shock and awe I discovered that I'm making a living! My business is barely 18 months old and I'm able to pay my bills, including the expensive air fares and hotels involved in this commuting thing I'm doing, which means that I'm almost ready to move to Dar es Salaam to really give this venture 110% effort, because I know that I'm becoming known in my chosen marketplace. Now if it hadn't been for my ecademy explorations I'd never have come across the advice about how long it normally is expected to take for a business to take off and I might by now have given up. There's always the adventure too of receiving notification of a new visitor to my profile or a new member of the Canadian Club, and messages from people who have decided they have something to say to me. Thanks!! Delphine du Toit

Hi Penny I echo so much of what has been written but I still feel compelled to add my support to your blog and your message about networking. I still remember the first meeting we had over a cup of coffee at Cafe Rouge in Farnham. We had no agenda, no particular purpose for the meeting, but I felt I got so much. For my 11 years in corporate life I was "taught" never to share ideas, never discuss plans with anyone but your boss (who then stole all my ideas anyway!!) because you shouldn't trust anyone. How pleasantly surprised I was when I "got" what networking was all about. The number of ideas that have been shared, the inspirational moments, the stories of success. And I have certainly found that here in Ecademy. My best business buddies have all come from Ecademy, so thanks Penny for coming up the idea all those years ago :) Karen Karen Skidmore CanDoCanBe Helping women create successful home businesses Free Weekly Articles that will grow your business Networking For Women :: Business Support for Women :: Business Coaching for Women:: To view the latest articles and top tips on Karen's Kick-Ass Blog - Business Advice for Home Businesses- visit www.candocanbe.typepad.com

Penny, there's not a lot that hasn't been said in the lovely comments below - may I just echo them. The number of wonderful contacts and friends I have made on Ecademy in a relatively short space of time completely confirms its ethos. There's a lot of caring and sharing going on and plenty of time for more still to be done! It saddened me for a while to read so much whingeing in the blogs, however we have the choice to either get sucked into it, or rise above it and shine as you suggest. What a fantastic blog to send to all those people who don't 'get' Ecademy - it should be sent out as a single link in a special email to all Network Pass holders before their Pass expires (so it doesn't get lost in the mass of information they receive). Personally, I would have liked this sometime during my first year (I was a slow starter). Once I got the concept of Ecademy it has changed my life. It has brought me so many warm associations, some lifelong friends, an extended family, people who now work with me as members of my teams, people who I value as clients, people who supply me with services - and even a partner! Where else would I find all this under one 'roof'? Ecademy has a warm place in my heart - I am in my flame and success has come easier than I ever imagined possible; thank you Penny! Using Social Networking to grow your business

Dear Penny, First of all many thanks for sharing your advice and wonderful journey with us. I believe a potential challenge for Ecademy going forward is the keeping the balance between being and acting like a small close knit family, having a large growing membership and having several tiers of membership. I propose areas that should be looked at for possible improvement are: -Internal communication between senior management of Ecademy and messages sent to them by some members e.g. If senior managers are too busy to reply expectations should be set so that the members do not feel they are being ignored due to their membership level status. -External communication of Ecademy e.g. there has recently been some negative on-line press about Ecademy. Would be good to have Ecademy press office counter this. -Have an independent questionnaire completed to assess the perception of Ecademy amongst its members. One of the questions could be "Is Ecademy really user generated by its members or a showcase tool my some 'elite' people within Ecademy?" My comments above are meant to serve the members of Ecademy many of whom I have had the pleasure to meet. It is all too easy just to stay quite and do nothing and so I hope my words are taken in a positive spirit of support. Warm regards Abhi Naha

Hi Penny, I think your blogg is really useful and has helped me to start networking, something that is outside of my comfort zone! I think the difficult thing for someone new to the world of self employment is having to put in the effort to actually get work, which as an employee was never the case. Did you ever feel that way at the beginning and was it long before you felt that you had really made the right decision to remain self employed? I love what I do (HR consultancy) and I hope I can find what it takes to hang in there and be successful. Best Wishes Tricia

Social networking? It's all heart

Fabulous blog, as ever, Penny, and some great comments. However, I detect - as I do when I hear you speak - that you are saying everything from your heart. You say that you and Thomas are "normal" people. But "normal" people - whatever they are - rarely speak from the heart. They are bound by social rules and conventions which often prevents them from saying what they truly feel - and that's why they don't succeed in social networks, because no-one sees the real person. This is why you are not "normal" (in the nicest possible sense). You are extraordinary because you are prepared to share your true feelings. And if we are to succeed in social networking, that's what we must all do. Ed Nash Penny, good to hear from you again. I attended the Telegraph Business Club in Manchester today with other Ecademists including Eric Hearn, Jeremy Dent and Warren Cass. First speaker was BT Local. Their message was unequivocal, business in the future will get a far greater proportion of its sales through social networking which is why they and other large corporations are investing so heavily in it. Second speaker was from the Institute of Sales and Marketing Management. Their message - anyone without a networking plan to use social business networks alongside traditional methods will not prosper. The message is clear and your thesis could not come at a more appropriate time. You, Thomas, Glenn, Julian and the team have been ahead of your time, often lone voices in the wilderness standing firm against a myriad of scorn, Luddism, scepticism and narrowmindedness. The world now accepts what you say and wants more. Ecademy has come through this forge and is all the stronger for it.Through all this you have never faltered in your conviction. Your time is now. Thank you for guiding us and showing us the way forward. Let's all grasp this opportunity to grow with you. Using Social Networking to grow your business - My aspirations!

Hi Penny, Thank you in deed. It means how caring you are about your contacts - social capital? It was early 2004, Nitin Gupta lead me to LinkedIn (probably from ryze) when I had almost no knowledge as to what this (online) networking was all about. There was a challenge to increase my network; I decided to contact the most connected ones; many of my contact requests to top connected Americans were declined with rebuke; Thomas not only accepted my request there but also lead me to Ecademy - the only network I am a paid member of since then - my sustainable love with (social) online networking! There have been many changes but the slogan 'raising social capital' for 'global community' has got embedded in my sub-conscience. And now my social capital includes contacts (at many network forums)of those whom I really love to be in contact (network) with - best human beings, top-notch professionals, thinkers, business leaders and what not! Social Networking? It is now well considered as 'scoial technology' - particularly the online networking. It helps in creating something unperishable - relationship; and my friend Rory Murray is well recognized on lecturing about return on this investment (reletionship) - RoR. I hope what I wrote in answering "What do you really really use/want from business/personal social networking websites/platforms? at LinkedIn", will be of interest to your and my contacts here. To me now the real challenge is, as to how to be and remain productive and beneficial for my contacts or more accurately make best use of 'social capital'? I welcome readers' thoughts on this, even via email. Looking back on Social Networking

When we look back on the Social Networking phenomenon in a couple of years time it will become obvious that many of these experiments were built on a foundation of sand. Somebody will have solved the issue of repeatedly doing your username, password, profile etc to join a new network and you will be able to transplant your profile into any social network that you want with a few clicks of the keyboard. However, you will also have much more data apon which to assess wether you want to join or not and in many cases you will not. Security reasons will be a significant factor here. Also the " tools of connectivity " will have become rather similar - you can add photos, films, blogs etc etc on any network. Quality of connection and quality of community will outweigh number of connections and number of communities. It has been said that Ecademy is an extended family. I would much rather be in an extended family than some faceless, unfeeling, connectivity machine. ( No names mentioned :) ) Helping People Get Results

Using co-creation to grow your business

Ecademy is a great little place to do more than one thing, but I like the definition 'social-slash-business network' - and have my own interpretation of it. To me Ecademy is a place for social networking with business people. I don't think there is such a thing as 'business networking' (can you call the Yellow Pages a business network?). All networking that has traditionally happened in pre-digital times (and led to enormous business results), has always been social networking - between business people. Using technology to match people according to some criteria (similarities, or demand-meets-supply) is a very useful function of any platform, but may end up there - a 'dating engine'. It takes something else to turn the contact management and matching capabilities into true networking, and Ecademy has that 'something else'. As the article asserts, there is a community here. Which cannot be said about LinkedIn, for example - an otherwise very useful and tremendously successful site, where interaction between users is limeted to requesting and making connections. But communities dominate (as Ecademist Tomi Ahonen has titled his book, co-written with Alan Moore) - and even on LinkedIn a community is emerging, using platform functionality that was not intended for that: the Questions and Answers section was designed to encourage and add UGC (user-generated content) in line with current fashions, so that LinkedIn could call itself a 'Web 2.0' business in front of financial markets analysts. But a number of members usurped it for lengthy comment-on-the-comment threads, not unlike our Ecademy blogs, turning it effectively into a discussion board, a forum. That site may be far from true social networking (yet) but this is a telling step in that direction. At Ecademy I have met a number of high-value individuals (and by my personal criteria that doesn't mean 'high-net-worth' financially, but intellectually rich people with positive attitude and high ethical standards). Exchanging views, ideas and opinions on everything but my business is what I would call social networking. If any business results from that (and some has resulted, paying me far more than the cost of being here) - that's the 'free bonus' of social networking. I don't visit Ecademy to sell or buy anything, I get value in other ways - and sometimes business 'just happens'. But let's look at what else makes a social network so beneficial to one's business. The 'Everything 2.0' fashion is very much like the 'E-everything' of the previous decade, this site's brand not an exception. We have seen 'Marketing 2.0', 'Telecoms 2.0', 'Business 2.0' - yours truly is even guilty of publishing an article here about 'CRM 2.0'. Apart from the digitally-empowered 'connectedness' (hence social networks), one thing that radically characterises the '2.0' model is the participative approach, the user engagement in value creation - all that UGC buzz and the concept of co-creation. It may be an even more powerful reason to network in Ecademy - more than using the platform to market ourselves or sell our stuff. With such a diverse and high-quality mix of intelligent, professional individuals (this is not your MySpace of teenage yoyos), the potential for co-creation is tremendous. Even the value produced in some of these 'blogs' (I would call them forum debates), including this very one, is way beyond what any individual author could contrive. I would think of creative ways to harness this capacity and engage Ecademy members in truly innovative, creative endeavours resulting in new products, business models, methodologies, technologies - new solutions to old and new porblems, fulfilling more needs and generating more value. The show-stopper here (or stumbling block) is that American word that still haunts everything UGC: how to monetize it. Well, I think no single person has the answer, but collectively we may be able to find it :) Just an idea, about yet another way to benefit from being in Ecademy - Cheerz, V. Knowledge: the only product which, once sold, remains with the seller. Give it away!

Using Social Networking to grow your business

Dear Penny, You've certainly inspired some wonderful people ( and comments) in Ecademy and with this blog. My view is that any networking has to become social. Few of us will recommend someone we haven't met and Ecademy with the clubs and meetings gives major opportunities compared with the other business sites. Most of us value the social aspect to winning business. That said my business comes from people who are not on Ecademy (middle and senior managers in employment). I hoped Ecademy would attract them and they would see the importance of a network of committed self employed people with leading edge skills. However Ecademy does not seem to attract these people and I use it for education and to buy the things the self employed need but sadly it is not my main networking forum as I'm unlikely to get business on it. However I value and appreciate Ecademy. Best wishes Jonathan Palmer, Entrepreneurs, planning, innovation and corporate recovery JP@The-Bridge.biz www.The-Bridge.biz

Using Social Networking to grow your business

Hi there Penny, Excellent comments that help other "flamed" individuals draw towards you and to each other. Social networking is the way to move forward. Just now, I had a very important meeting with a VIP at the Novotel in Hammersmith. This wouldn't have happened if my networking, and can I state, social networking experiences and skills hadn't been used, acted up and recognised. Penny, with the greatest respect to you and your blog - go girl, go!! Penny, thank you for taking the time to craft so elegantly the passion you feel for Ecademy. What you say resonates very strongly with commentators, including me. As the heart of Ecademy, a key task may well be to ensure that, outside the Blackstar membership, as many heartbeats as possible are mobilised and cajoled into action and your suggestions (start a club et al) should be heeded. Indeed, your reference to creativity and energy is noted - having founded the "Creativity and Innovation at Work" Club on Ecademy in the first wave of club formations...enormously rewarding and still tripping across collaborators even now with tangible support from Thomas at the time. Borrowing from the wisdom of a co worker, Joan Bird, that alignment of thoughts, feelings and emotions creates energy (through prayer), this is clearly your philosophy too, and it shows!

Hi Penny I like the section you wrote on attraction. When I met with Thomas and yourself and your lovely family in Bali (Indonesia) back in Sep 2005, I could not resist but find myself longing to meet with you all, and witnes the unity and happiness you possess. As you have said, our attraction zone is when everyone likes you: humble, patient, kind, relationships and everyone feels great. Please keep the blog going! Dennis

Using Social Networking to change your life!

Dear Penny, There should really be another category of 'star'. SilverStar, DazzlingStar, BrilliantStar, NorthStar, InfiniteStar, BrightStar are all names fitting to the pioneers who show others the way. In your straightforward, honest and unpretentious manner you tell us how it is. This is why Ecademy works for so many, the star has more facets than you can easily count and it shines in every direction, it emits its own powerful energy, yet others can shine through each on their own unique frequency. My own energy has grown since I joined in May and I am learning the joy of Social Networking on an exponential curve compared with what went on before. With grace and light, John

Penny, An extraordinary blog. Written with passion and feeling. I believe that it truly encapsulates what social networking is all about. Take the best of Facebook, LinkedIn, local networking groups and local community activities and roll them all into one where YOU are the difference. People buy people not corporate identities. Ecademy can be seen as a vehicle to portray yourself as you really are. Like most people on Ecademy I need to be in my flame more consistently. Kind Regards Dave

Using Social Networking to grow your business

Thank you Penny for sharing your thoughts with me, I particularly like Rogers analogy of the candle, I know I have spent a little too much time in the wax recently, so thank you for reminding that I need to get back into my flame :-) Ecademy is a wonderful social/business networking community and somewhat unique in that it offers the opportunity of face to face networking, not simply an on-line forum. There is nothing more powerful than face to face networking to build, develop and maintain trust and when people trust you they will recommend you. And this is the power of Social Networking; it helps you develop your business through the most powerful of advertising mediums, word-of-mouth. Kind regards, Paul Patience

Using Social Networking to grow your business

Hi Penny Your blog explains the true essence of Ecademy. I'm not ashamed to admit it took me many weeks to write my first profile and find the courage to be able to tell people who I really was. After all what would strangers think of us when they read our profiles? Back then I thought Ecademy was a business club with businessmen and women connecting simply to find new opportunities. But I soon found that Ecademy was about people, its members, its community. Its were friendships are made, were trust and respect can be gained, were people can express thier views, interact with others who have similar interests, goals or needs. Hardships can be shared, problems can be solved and knowledge can be gained. Business may come, but your right to say first you must be yourself. Without Ecademy I may well have failed. Thank you. Kevin

Penny, As I have often said before : "The best thing that can happen to you on Ecademy is gaining a lot of business, in a worst case scenario you will only gain friends for life" !!! I still send my 3 experience-blogs (1/2/3) to new Belgian members ... even those outdated blogs still trigger enough to make them do the effort. Beautiful blog ... Keep on running this thing ! Using Social Networking to grow your business

Hi Penny, This is very timely and an excellent piece. I have been reviewing the best ways for me to make use of my often dormant membership of Ecademy or other Online Networking sites. And you have refreshed my thoughts on this. We met again earlier this year at one of the London events and we talked briefly about blogging and I was wondering if I had anything to actually offer in that space and I am now actively looking at how it can help me help others by showing how my expertise may help them. Thanks again for an excellent piece with passion. Best regards Karl Howe

Using Social Networking to grow your business

WOW Penny, This has to be one of the best blogs I've read ever; it's a "classic". As you stated you have written it with passion and providing the best advice from your many years as the top person in your field. I must admit my first experience of ecademy some years was not a positive one, WHY? simply because I did not use it effectively, I was lethargic in trying out the various functions and all I was interested in was the potential contacts and didn't try too hard at forming relationships. A bit like having a top of the range car and not knowing how to drive!! Being older and wiser, this time I have "seen the light" with ecademy and have concentrated more on my profile, tried the many tools and functions, submitted a few blogs, taken time to help and build relationships with people, joined some clubs and seriously thinking of starting my own club. What really opened up my eyes to ecademy was listening to your great talk in Henley last week, the difference being all the attendees present could feel and experience your passion for ecademy and how you see it helps many people. As I stated I've enjoyed many benefits and value from ecademy this time, but especially being able to form a friendship with Ian Misner and your good self and for both of your kindness in helping me with my book. I have recommended ecademy to many people and "enlightened" the few who stated they haven't yet tried to use it as it should be. I hope I can return this favour to you both and I look forward to continuing to be part of the ecademy community indefinitely. To your continued success. Penny - how timely you are with this Blog! I was beginning to lose my way a bit with Ecademy - as I am between two businesses and felt I had nothing to promote whilst I am setting up my new business! You have reminded me that I don't need to have 'something' to promote as that is not what Ecademy is about! I am now committed to getting back to helping others, building relationships and yes - asking others for help!

Using Social Networking to grow your business

Dear Penny, As for you Ecademy has created a lot of new opportunities for me as a person and for my businesses. I'm as you know a very enthousiastic networker. I've grown my business on the basis of building and maintaining a network. I've just enjoyed reading your blog. It makes a lot of sense, and it is good to read about what makes you tick! I'm sure that Ecademy has taken a lot of effort to get it to what it is today. However I'm also pretty sure that it has also given you a lot in return. In my view this is a great comparison to online networking. It takes a lot of effort and you need to give it all you've got. You put a tremendous effort in helping others. However if you do so in a honnest genuine way experience has proved me that I've got a lot in return. I've gathered a lot of new friends all over the world. And with those people I have great contacts and we can discuss lot's of social and business topics. Since most of those people know What I do What sort of person I am What I know Who I know What I like to do What i'm suposed to be good at And where I spent most of my time on They like to tell their friends about what I do and perhaps even tell their friends how I could help them! This has resulted in the fact that I do most of my business in a warm market. That my marketing budget has shrunk tremendously That I enjoy more what I do and who I work with and for My business is more profitable and I have more time to spent with friends. So like you I encourage everyone to also try to network. Offer people your help without asking something in return. Give and ye shall be givven to! I get lot of energy from helping others. and By helping others I also help myself! Kind regards and happy networking Fred Rutgers fred.rutgers@debedrijver.nl +31649436436 Fred Rutgers www.debedrijver.nl fred.rutgers@debedrijver.nl +31649436436 Also check out my details on linkedin and xing P.S. let's get connected! Penny, Thank you for sharing this excellent overview of how to make the Ecademy journey a success. There is one particular area that resonates with me completely. That is to make the Ecademy experience a fun experience. When you bring your spirit into being a part of Ecademy, your become more attractive to fellow members and readers of your blogs, profile, etc. When you start playing at Ecademy rather than just use it as a business tool, it's a lot more fun and you attract amazing people around yourself. By taking this approach, I've been lucky enough to be surrounded by some of the most inspirational people right here on Ecademy.
