People Are Freaking Out Over A Conservative Whose Twitter Account Keeps Getting Shut Down

Dear Ecademists,

What's wrong with twitter?

Twitter increasingly behaves like a totalitarian state, suspending and closing twitter accounts for no reason!

If you look at Brett LoGiurato's article People Are Freaking Out Over A Conservative Whose Twitter Account Keeps Getting Shut Down from Business Insider you'll notice the date, April 30, 2012.

Well this may be a simple operational risk from twitter, nothing particular, I thought!

But then I got confirmation again that twitter may have lost control over its system, this time, through a Swiss Newspaper, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, where Henning Steier on April 4 related a similar case in "Wie ich von Twitter suspendiert wurde" (how I got suspended from Twitter)

It looks that very recently, twitter has changed from an open, random and supportive social media to a close, selective and controlling censoring tool that may lose all its credibility and reputation if it cannot solve the problem!

What do you think?

What's wrong with twitter?

Please feel free to comment!

Have a great and happy weekend!

What's wrong with twitter?

Should we trust Twitter?Dear Ecademists, Twitter users are rightly aghast that the company on Sunday banned a user for openly criticizing NBC's coverage of the Olympics. After Guy Adams, a British newspaper reporter for The Independent, posted negative comments about NBC's tape-delayed Olympics coverage (including one executive's work e-mail for viewers to make complaints), Twitter alerted its business partner -- NBC -- and showed the network how to file a complaint capable of shutting down the offending user. Forget Twitter, in China it's the Weibo Olympics It has been called the first "Twitter Olympics," but in China the London Games are undoubtedly the first "Weibo Olympics." Doesn't Twitter, my dear ecademists, behave more and more like a totalitarian state? Isn't it time to emigrate from twitter? What do you think? Have a great and happy day! Best, Lucas

Twitter apologizes for encouraging NBC to file complaint against journalistTwitter has outlined the policy behind its decision to suspend the account of journalist Guy Adams and has apologized for what it calls "unacceptable" proactive flagging. In a blog post, General Counsel Alex McGillivray said that while Adams' tweet was rightly identified as possibly breaking the terms of service by posting a private email address, Twitter should not have encouraged NBC to file a complaint about it. What's wrong with twitter?

Hi, Thanks for this post. I have not been using twitter since a long time. I don t consider twitter to be so user friendly. Hence, Facebook is a better choice for me. It is important to make twitter a more attractive, useful site.

Robert Scoble Says Twitter Feels A Lot Like A Ghost TownDear Readers of this Thread, Matt Lynley from Business Insiders confirms my hypothesis that Twitter has lost attention through his article: "Internet Guru Robert Scoble Says Twitter Feels A Lot Like A Ghost Town" Google+ isn't getting a lot of fair coverage in the press, says Internet guru Robert Scoble. While a lot of the tech press has said Google+ is a "ghost town," Scoble says it's actually Twitter's started to feel more like a ghost town. "Seriously, I know Twitter's not a ghost town, but it sure feels like that because of the usage model there," Scoble said in a post on Google+. "As it has turned into more of an "information utility" and less of a community it feels more and more empty." Since July of last year, he's gone from 0 to 1.5 million followers on Google Plus, and 13,000 to 261,000 followers on Facebook. But he's only gone from 240,000 followers to 260,000 followers on Twitter. He said that's because there aren't any noise controls on Twitter, so users are getting overloaded and aren't following more people. Here are some of the highlights of his argument over on Google+: So, what's the new social media ghost town? I say it's Twitter.Follower growth has NOT kept up there with the other services, which is telling me something. That while number of tweets have gone up, people are getting overloaded so they aren't following more people. Why is that? Because there isn't any noise controls on Twitter (Facebook's feed, on my screens, is a LOT more useful than Twitter's feeds).I'm on Google+'s suggested user list, which is gifting me a huge number of followers. But I got up to 230,000 without ever being on that list here. Lots of people are signing up and at least a few ARE sticking around here.Over on Facebook there are ways to get spread around more, and juice its suggested user feature (this is one thing Facebook does better than Twitter or Google+ since this list is algorithmic and doesn't show a single same list to every user), which gets you more users.Facebook juices its subscriber numbers through lists. If you get put on a list with, say, 30,000 followers, all those followers will be added to your follower count.Do you agree with Robert Scoble's analysis that Twitter is the new social media ghost town? Robert Scoble's evaluation goes in the same direction that mine that Twitter has totally lost attention! What do you think? Have a great and happy Sunday! Best, Lucas

Guy Kawasaki Compares Google+ to Apple, Calls it a 'Religious Experience'Dear Ecademists, Emily Price wrote on Mashable that Guy Kawasaki Compares Google+ to Apple, Calls it a 'Religious Experience', an article that really caught my whole attention, particularly as an answer to this thread, started 20 days ago where I asked what's wrong with twitter? "When I started Google+ I didn't need another social media/social networking service," he said Tuesday. "I had plenty to do with Twitter and Facebook. But when I saw Google + it's as if scales were removed from my eyes." What tell us the markets? Facebook's market capitalization has already lost one third in only one single week from $110 billion to only $70 billion and twitter is losing attention at the speed of light.... Are Twitter and Facebook following MySpace in having lost to attract attention? What do you think? Have a great and happy Friday! Best, Lucas

What's wrong with twitter?

I think it is acting less ORS, and it matters because Twitter is supposed to be one of the enablers of all things good in this new Social Media world. If we take it back to basics Twitter is conversation before it is anything else, then the rules and guidelines that apply to conversation can be modified and applied here. The more Twitter grows the greater the challenge. Lest we forget even in our democracies we still had the likes of Hyde Park's Speakers Corner, and that has its good and bad points. The question is how do you tie people to the consequences of their utterances. I think it was Balzac who said I may not like what you say but I will defend your right to say it. - that's one way of getting everything out in the open! An updated version of Balzac's quote should be appended "so long as you are prepared to face the consequences".

55,000 Twitter Accounts Hacked, You Should Probably Change Your PasswordDear Ecademists, Paul Lilly who writes for HotHardware.com just published that tens of thousands of Twitter accounts have been compromised in a recent hack attack in which more than 55,000 passwords were leaked and posted to Pastebin by anonymous hackers. But now comes the most intriguing part of the story: Most of the accounts supposedly belonged to spammers, and there were many duplicate entries, Twitter officials pointed out, but to play it safe, you should probably change your Twitter password today. "The list of alleged accounts & passwords consists of more than 20,000 duplicates. Also suspended spam accounts & incorrect login credentials," Twitter stated in a tweet. Now what does this mean? Does twitter now bother for spam accounts and delete or suspend real accounts more frequently than we all think? What do you think? Are you concerned by this news? Please feel free to comment! Have a great and happy day! Best, Lucas

What's wrong with twitter?

Dear Lucas, my only thought is that like Twitter like Google are trying to keep it real. Certainly with Google marketers are not getting away with things they used to, even they have often give ridiculous reasons for closing down Adwords accounts for example. Twitter certainly is a great platform for informing people about going what's on. The timeline moves so fast that I reckon most tweets don't get read after following a certain number of people. So it becomes a question of creating a higher number of tweets in order to be seen. There is one guy I know who has a lot of success with twitter they boast £40,000 days, selling his service how to use it for business. He claims that you don't get the traffic if you only have one account, so they overcome the problem of being shut down by using a moving IP address (which I don't support by the way) and twitter accounts in the hundreds all pointing at his blog or service offering. Best Regards David

What's wrong with twitter?

Dear Lucas, My Twitter account was suspended for three weeks. Reason: I Twittered LIKES from Ecademy blogs. I wrote seven very polite emails to the Twitter support and explained that Ecademy is mainly a social and educational site but got the same reply back: "Read our spam rules, CLOSE your automation with Ecademy." I did, but still didn't get my account back until I found out that a friend's colleague has changed job and is part of Twitter Management now. He helped me. Kind regards Suz
