Earth's population is currently estimated to be about 7 billion, so there's a cell phone for every 86 of 100 people. The estimate does not necessarily mean that 86 percent of the world population currently owns a mobile phone, just that the number of cell phone subscribers represents 86 percent of the global population. In other words, some people may have multiple phones for work and personal reasons, so that may increase the number of total subscriptions. The ITU estimates that China accounts 1 billion subscriptions, which is about 74 percent of its 1.34 billion population. India, the world's second most populated country, is on track to cross the 1 billion-subscriber milestone at the end of the year.
What do you think?
How many people own a cell phone? As I already mentioned, it's difficult to get a precise estimate on the number of individuals who own a mobile phone as some people may have multiple phones for work and personal reasons! If there exist 6 million cell phone subscriptions but only 2.4 billion Internet subscription, the true number of individuals who own a mobile phone must be more than 2.4 billion but less than 6 billion! Please feel free to guess, to comment, to share, to criticize and to assume!Have a great and happy weekend!Best,- Lucas
