Supermarket meat - Why does it taste so bad?

Does any body know why meat is so much like cardboard these days?I am told that it is all the chemicals and water that goes into the product. Others have told me it is the growth hormones that the beasts are given. My sister tells me it is the quality of the food that the animals are given which in itself contains so much rubbish (and worse), chemicals are required to ensure that the meat doesn't smell bad.Whatever - the end result is meat that is just not worth eating anymore - expensive and a horrible taste and texture.What can be done? Any thoughts? I guess a good butcher is an obvious solution but I can't afford to pay his prices too often, so I thought I would whinge here and see what everyone else thinks.
